Hi,
Now that my site is nearly finished, I have been trying to decide on how and where to host it. In the end, I liked the idea of hosting from home over ADSL/cable.
I hope to run a SQL server and an IIS server behind a firewall, but will not be able to afford brand name servers. Is there anybody out there doing the same sort of thing, that can give me an idea as to what spec of machine's I need for the job. I don't expect huge traffic, but don't want my service to suffer as a consequence of crap hardware.
Any ideas/links?

I don't know, but hosting from home over DSL/Cable sounds kind of expensive to me.
DSL connection/bandwidth, UPS(?) uptime stuffs,..
Have you considered shared hosting or get dedicated server?

I was going to use ADSL rather than DSL. That's 512k downstream / 256k upstream. BT (British Telecom) have announced that they're slashing their ADSL prices. I think it will be something like £15 per month wholesale. I've been told that wholesale means you get a point in your wall with the connection and thats it. This means I need to supply the router, firewall, servers (Well, more like decent spec'd PC's), hub, UPS etc. Yep it's probably going to work out a little expensive. But I've been pricing about and it is quite expensive finding a good host offering web & SQL hosting.
I just like the idea of having more control.
Traffic shouldn't be all that high really. It wouldn't have that big an audience.

You probably knows it better than me but I have to ask in case you missed this out.
Does the BT package provides for you a Static IP address? We have ADSL broadband but for putting a web server on the internet we need DSL with IP address.

Sorry William, I forgot to mention the Static IP address is an additional £10 per month. Another plus I forgot to mention is that my employer is prepared to pay for my ADSL rental. I don't think they want me to have a social life!!

A dedicated connection here would cost roughly 200 Pounds per month. If you can look after your server, your roof don't leak, your dog don't chew the lines..well by all means do so.
Matter of fact, you can even get some pple hosted with you for extra $$!

Well for "starters" you'll need a minimum of a PIII 850, 512 RAM and a SCSI HDD (don't even think about using a IDE HDD) for the web server. Then figure a PIII850 w/ 1GB RAM and another SCSI HDD for the SQL server(put them both on the same box and you are doomed before you start). Now add one DNS server (you can run one on the web server)- since you need two seperate servers. Oh yeah - add at the very least another IP address (the DNS servers have to have different IPs).
Cost it out
- W2k Advanced Server - $3999.00
- SQL Server - $4999.00
- Firewall - $1,000.00 (aprox)
- Hardware - $3000.00 (aprox)
Then figure the 256K DSL is way slow!
BTW, ADSL IS DSL just one flavor.

You can cut your SQL Server and Win2K server fee's by 50% if you purchase on Ebay.
I have made a several software purchases through Ebay and have refered others that have done the same.
These are the full-blown versions. So far, everything I have purchased has been new in the box and half the price.

Good topic! And I have the perfect resource for anyone considering hosting their own site through their DSL or cable connection: DSL/Cable Webserver. It covers all your questions, and incidentally, happens to be run from the guys' home via his DSL connection.
Of course, it's generally only viable for low traffic sites.

For developement and self education purposes, I run an NT server, with IIS on weird ports on a perfectly legal copy of Microsoft SW (NT, IIS, Proxy, SQL, etc etc) that I purchased from Microsoft for $99.00, I'll soon be "upgrading" to 2000 Enterprise with all the latest servers, again legal, purchased direct from Microsoft for a total of $299. All of this is being run on a total hardware budget of $2000.00 including three functioning servers and 4 client machines (and they will continue to work under 2000, I tested then rolled back) on My cable connection ( a TOTAL violation of the TOS, but as long as there isn't very heavy volume, and you keep it secure and clean of Trojans and such [know what you are doing] causeing problems for them, they wink and look the other way).
Grant it... I don't use any of this for a "real commercial site", but I could, and mostly legal (except the TOS cable connection)...very cheap.
By the way....eBay is a great place to buy stuff (hardware).
sometimes I feel like I'm working with all three hands tied behind my back...
