SuperConductor -> RE: No need to be nice (3/5/2002 13:13:56)

Woodymsu,

I am getting an error when I hover over the navigation images. ('Expected Object')

In looking through the code, I couldn't find the "changeimage" javascript function.

Nice Site...but I think there is a little too much empty space above the navigation. By 'scrunching' this area down, you get much more of your site in the immediate view of the browser.

----------
OK...wow that was quick, you must have been reading my mind. Just one thing...the 'Forum' and 'Breeders' hover images are just a pixel or two larger than the normal button...it makes the navigation area jump up and down a little bit...makes me kinda queasy.
-----------

Best of Luck. OK...OK...no more edits.

Good tip on the header space. I'll crunch it down. I've also seen the error message on the botton of the browser, but it does not seem to affect function. It's the result of mouseover code generated by bannermaker 4.0 that's in my top shared border.

More Comment, Tip - Give me more!!!

I.M.Learning -> RE: No need to be nice (3/5/2002 14:07:53)

Very nice for a horticulturist! Multi-talented, very nice. I think the main pic should be just a tad smaller...no, I change my mind it's fine. But the heading/text that's to the left of it should be a tad smaller -- it's too big and spread out.

I also get a jump when I mouse over Forum or Breeders, and I see a whole bunch of white space at the bottom of the page that s/b removed. I like the pages as you move thru the site - good job! And I personally love the way you did the photo gallery, with all the very colorful pics tight together - quite a look like that!

woodymsu -> RE: No need to be nice (3/5/2002 14:27:23)

Thanks -

I've taken your advice and made the text on the left smaller. I also know about the jumping but am not sure how to correct it.

Keep the tips coming.

I use your suggestions and republish so everyone can see the changes.

Tim

On my monitor your logo's background is slightly gray and not white. You'll need to up the contrast so it blends on your white canvas..

woodymsu -> RE: No need to be nice (3/5/2002 14:41:43)

Thanks - I've adjusted the contrast of the gif and it now blends in and the edges are no longer to be seen.

Keep the Tips and opions coming. All opions are valued!!

Thanks

SuperConductor -> RE: No need to be nice (3/5/2002 16:43:33)

Tim,

Be sure to include your 'ChangeImage' function on all pages.

I'm getting the same error when I go to other pages in your site.

Also, the 'jumping' on the navigation bar is caused by the 'hover' image (image used on the mouseover) being larger than the normally displayed image. This causes the table, for your navigation, to automatically adjust itself for the change in image size.

woodymsu -> RE: No need to be nice (3/6/2002 8:34:25)

Thanks for the advice SuperConductor. I suspected there was a size problem on the mouse over gif.

I'm still interest in eveyone's opionions and advice (good and bad) as well as overall opinions.

Thanks Tim

Richard Sterling -> RE: No need to be nice (3/6/2002 8:41:52)

Color Choice background color is still showing through.

woodymsu -> RE: No need to be nice (3/6/2002 8:47:27)

I'm making the changes on my pc as I get them and have not yet republisehd. But thanks. I went through the whole site and set the back ground as white.

As soon as I figure out my mouseover error problem and fix it I'll repost.

More comments Please.

SuperConductor -> RE: No need to be nice (3/6/2002 11:14:25)

Tim,

I looked at your site in Netscape 4.7...

unfortunately, it was not pretty. Are you using absolute positioning for some of the images (or possibly layering). Sorry, I didn't peruse through the source code on my own. I will when I get the chance.

On a brighter note...
You do have a great setup. It's easy to read, great images, and good color combinations. You don't have very far to go to make this an excellent site...just seems to be tweaks at this point.

Best of Luck.

Hi WoodyMSU,

Welcome aboard. Unfortunately I cannot get to your site from the office...

However, if you stick around here, you'll soon be a webmaster.
We just had a long discussion about exactly what a webmaster is, and the opinions are vast, different, but essentially all correct. In the least detailed of all definitions, you will fit the description of a webmaster.

What I'm trying to say here is, welcome...someone will almost always help you, and you'll soon be very comfortable with building websites.

woodymsu -> RE: No need to be nice (3/6/2002 11:47:25)

Thanks for all the help, advice and yes even kind remarks. I did read the discussion on what is a webmaster. I do not pretend to be in the same class as many of the regulars at this site. I don't consider myself a webmaster, but I must admit that I have alot of fun with front page. It allows me to feel like a webmaster at times,

This site, the moderators, and the contributers are the best!!! I have gotten some great advice.

For example my site had a problem with errors related to a mouseover on my shared boarder. My indiex page was fine but all the other pages showed a page error. I read the outfront article on shared borders and found the solution: the Header Java script must be placed on each page. Problem solved and I'm in the process of fixing it now.

I have Republished and have made changes based on your imput. I liked the suggestions.

Absolute Postioning problem with Netscape. This was interesting. I guess I'll have to take a look using netscape to see where I've goofed.

I started this web before I had a good understanding of tables, so some pages are perhaps better than others.

Well thank you again.

And please post more advice and comments!!

Tim

LOL, I dunno Tim, sounds to me like you have a pretty good handle on building a website... You've come to the right place... you're one of us.

sandwellmind -> RE: No need to be nice (3/8/2002 4:28:09)

I think the site looks great and I really like the navigation!

I really don't like Netscape....does anyone know roughly how many people are still using it.

I prefer IE much more.
(Microsoft still suck though)

My God....I'm babbling.
I'll leave before I give myself a bad name

I've made the changes that you all suggested:

1) Fixed the page Error caused by my java mouse over. (Thanks superconductor)

2) Scrunched down my header to show more content on page open.(Thanks superconductor)

3) Changed all my page backgounds to white (This was alot of work and I have to wonder how many people set their browers to any other color than white - What's the purpose?)

4) Loaded Netscape navagatior and view the anomelies. There were some but not as many as I expected. Most were on the headers of the individual plant pages. Fixed. (Thanks superconductor)

5) Reduced the font size on the opening pages. (Thanks IM Learning)

6) adjusted the gif size on the top hyperlinks that was producing a jump.(thanks superconductor)

7) uped the contrast on the title gif ColorChoice to get rid of the grey background. (Thanks Godshall2, R Sterling))

Thank you all. I greatly appreciate your advice.

More comments are welcome.

woodymsu,
Just as a personal preference, I set my Window Background color to an off-white. I am on the PC a lot, everyday. It just makes it easier on my eyes. Because of this, images with a white background stick out like a sore thumb.

This is not a huge issue, but I myself am pretty anal retentive...

It's looking great.

SuperConductor -> RE: No need to be nice (3/11/2002 10:31:28)

woodymsu,

I really like this site. If there was one last to improve on, it would be to keep all of you pages consistent. Such as:

1) Plant List Page - Has a different background than the rest of the pages.
2) Keep the fonts consistent. The fonts in the body of your text vary in size. It may not appear so to you because your PC's default font may be the same as what you are using for the page.
3) Keep hyperlinks consistent. You generally have the same color / font for the hyperlinks, but on the 'About Us' page, there is a link that will bold on hovering, and even further down there is one that bolds and turns red.
4) On the sources page, add a 'back to top' link. Lots of up and down scrolling otherwise.
5) Keep your 'page footer' consistent. Sometimes the advertisement .gif file is in the center, then it's on the right, then it's not there...also, the fonts are different...

It may seem picky, but people do notice. They like consistencty and the expect perfection...imagine that.

Best of Luck

woodymsu -> RE: No need to be nice (3/11/2002 16:19:21)

good advice. I've made some of the chnages to add consistentcy but I am still having problems with my fonts. I have my defalut font set to arial but for some reason it changes to times roman.

more comments welcome

woodymsu -> RE: No need to be nice (3/14/2002 15:17:09)

Please offer you comments on:

- Does it load in a resaonable about of time?
Too slow or OK?

- Is it easy to navagate or is it confusing?

- How might I improve the site?
