Copyright symbol in Photoshop - 3/10/2002 19:27:40
This sounds like a dumb question, but how do I generate a copyright symbol in Photoshop when placing an embedded text copyright notice at the bottom of a photo using the text palette. This is not HTML; I know how to do that, but I can't find it in Photoshop 6.0 I'm using Verdana typeface; standard issue with Windows. If you go into notepad an use the above number sequence while holding down the alt key it will give you a copywrite symbol, you can then copy n paste this text symbol into a text line in photoshop... that should work.. let me know here... is better highlight the symbol below and copy and paste it into PS 6.0 text line: © Edited by - J-man on 03/10/2002 23:11:29

That did it... you're hired! I tried that with Word and it didn't work. Didn't think to do it in Notepad. You'd think Photoshop would have a library of those kinds of symbols somewhere... damned if I could find it. Thanks. I tried re-creating that sequence in Notepad and it didn't work. Saw nothing and only got the little tones when I tried to enter the text. Phil "If God is not a Tar Heel, then why are hyperlinks default-colored Carolina blue?" http://1awebhosting.com 1A Web Hosting for Frontpage.

OK; two of you say the Notepad process should work, but when I try it it's not working for some reason. Nor does the Word thing; I did the Import symbol process, and that works, but when I tried to migrate it to Photoshop I get a letter "a" with a ~ on it in place of the copyright symbol, and no matter what typeface I use, it migrates as Arial. Let's do this: Pretend I am in the third grade and take me step-by-step through this notepad thing (Sheesh; this HAS to be easier than it seems...) I have about 75 photos I need to process with the copyright symbol and I gotta get this. Thanks, y'all; I'm going to bed now, so please post it and I'll take it up tomorrow. I can't see you going wrong if you converted the © to a symbol (image) eliminated the background of white and merged it into the photo..... "i think there 4 i am"

Why not just make a "c" and then stroke a circle around it with the elliptical marquee tool.. It be a lot faster.. Troy | www.aplustemplates.com

I know this is going to sound stupid but, was the num lock key pressed when you typed the alt and 0169? I had that happen once. I hit the type tool, pressed the alt 0169 and nothing appeared. I went round and round and couldn't figure out why the stupid thing wasn't working and then realized that the num lock key wasn't pressed! This was back in version 5 so I know it worked even back then. Gary Ready Page Graphic Design www.ready-page.com

Thanks gang... I'll give this a try when I get home. Isn't there a library of these things in Photoshop somewhere? Phil "If God is not a Tar Heel, then why are hyperlinks default-colored Carolina blue?" http://1awebhosting.com 1A Web Hosting for Frontpage.

Can use Front Page for all kinds of things: Insert Symbol for the © Then copy. Then go into Photoshop and paste it in the text line. Wish I could get Word Pad to work with alt 0169, but never have. Robert Tracy

akston, assuming your running windows OS on a non-mac computer, it would be safe to assume that you have a currupt file perventing you from special characters. If your os version is win 95 or 98, running SFC.exe may correct the problem, although you will need to have the OS disk handy.

Phil, Here is what I did. I don't have Photoshop but it works in Photoshop Elements. I did this in both notepad and word. Created the symbol with the methods discussed. copied it, went into PSE, used the text tool to make a text box and pasted. It worked. Let us know. Paula

Funny, in PS 6.0. I tried the Alt 0169 and it produced a copyright symbol. What version do you have Phil? Gene White http://www.gwhitedesign.com

quote: Funny, in PS 6.0. I tried the Alt 0169 and it produced a copyright symbol. What version do you have Phil?
6.0. And it simply does not work. I have tried different fonts, and it doesn't work. I finally went to Dreamweaver and went Insert>Special Character>Copyright and it inserted the "© code" in my HTML, and the copyright symbol appeared; I cut and pasted and it worked. So, screw it. That's just how I'll do it, but for the life of me I cannot understand why MY copy of PS 6.0 will not work. I tried Verdana which is shipped with Windows XP, Times Roman, and the font I'm using for my copyright, "BlacklightD" and none of them will give me a copyright notice. Very strange. When I push the "Alt" button down and hold it down as I type, it nevers creates any text whatsoever. The same process is supposed to work in Word Pad, and Notepad, but it doesn't. Oh well. Maybe I got one of them California versions of PS. I don't know. It's not worth the brain power; I'll just live with the workaround, but what a pain in the a**. Thanks anyway everyone who responded. If someone wants to try to figure this out for the academic excercise and for the grand satisfcation of solving a mystery, be my guest. I'd like to know, because it's bound to be easier than using the workaround, but it's starting to make me angry that everyone says the same thing and I can't get it to work. I'll try any suggestion anyone has... thanks again! Phil "If God is not a Tar Heel, then why are hyperlinks default-colored Carolina blue?" http://1awebhosting.com 1A Web Hosting for Frontpage. No, I just click on the Text tool and then click on my image which creates a text layer and start typing. Phil "If God is not a Tar Heel, then why are hyperlinks default-colored Carolina blue?" http://1awebhosting.com 1A Web Hosting for Frontpage.

Well Phil, I agree that it is something screwed up on your machine only. I found an old version of 5 and the alt 169 worked fine and, of course, it worked fine on 6 as well when I clicked the text tool. (Except I once again had the num lock key off... Once I did that, it worked). I had it set to times roman but as long as it is a standard font, it worked. Anyway, as you said, this appears to be a quirk on your machine since it doesn't work when editing in any of the items. I'm a little surprised it worked with the insert in DW. I'd rather throw flowers, since there are light i guess i'd have to throw them hard.. ummmph... no.. the flowers just don't fly far enough. I think this post symbolizes a lot about outfront, and the replies put in to help it. I'm been to some forums and usually there are a lot of unanswered question, or they are moderated or viewd in such a part-time basis that once you post a question.. you never go back to check if its been answered. <day dreaming... i'm on a internet advertising .avi based and i'm a spokes person for Outfront> SLAP.... back to work again Edited by - J-man on 03/13/2002 16:33:27

Hi! In one of the messages was suggested there should be a ready-made symbol in Photoshop to insert the copyright sign. Well, there is! If you go to the "custom shape tool" (can be hidden under Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon or Line Tool), you see in the option bar next to "shape:" a pull down menu. At the bottom of the standard list of shapes (in Photoshop CS3 Extended) you find both a copyright and a trademark symbol. If you do not see it by default, try loading another library of shapes. You can choose to insert it as a shape layer, path or fill pixels just as with any other object you insert with the shape-tools. I inserted it as a path, made all necessary changes (like rotation), changed it into a selection and then filled it with the desired color. Worked fine for me! Kind regards, Antha
