Which Meta Tags Keep - 3/11/2002 1:29:41
Hi,

Which meta tags can I eliminate and which do I need to keep, from these standard FP meta tags?

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">

I realize I need to add description and keyword tags.

Thank you
Herman

Hi Herman,
You can get rid of these two

<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">

I saw it suggested once that you could use the find and replace function to replace them with your description and keywords. I haven't done that because all my sites are small, but I bet that would be real handy if you have a large site.

Thanks for replying Paula - how about the necessity for the doctype tag? eg

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"><html lang="en">

Good question, maybe someone will come along and give us the answer. I guess it's not required, cause I haven't used it, but if you want to be W3C compliant... (I do, I really do, but I'm lazy!) Anybody care to comment on this? Should I go back and add this in my webs? Does it need to be on every page?

It's optional. It can be used to specify what characterset a browser to use. Unless you are using a foreign character set you can leave it out.
