What's the easiest way to do this? - 8/9/2001 19:32:00
I'm not a total newbie, just a newbie at using FP extensions and a domain of my own. Here's the info.. maybe someone can help.

I just got a new domain name and a hosting company who has agreed to redesign my site as part of the signup.

The site was not in my own domain name when I started the site some time ago. The host did not allow FP extensions unless you had your own domain name, naturally. I did not use INDEX at the time.

Now, I have set up the new host to use Front Page Extensions. The problem... There was a splash page, like a gateway, then the main page. Neither of these are INDEX pages.

What do I have to do to get these 20 or so pages uploaded to the host? Will I have to change all the links in the site, and make one of the above an INDEX page?

I feel a little dumb, but because I used FTP and not FP extensions, nor my own domain, it's like a whole new world for me! Your help and patience appreciated.

Thanks!

It depends on your host, but the first page loaded will have to be one of the following:
Default.htm(l) or Index.htm(l)

Generally, when using the publish feature in FP, the correct name for the first page will get changed to what ever the host needs. But, if in doubt and you want to make sure, most hosts put up a Under Construction page on the site until you get some pages created. Look at what extension this page has, then change your accordingly. Then, if you still want a splash page, make it the Index.html or default.html and then make your real first page something like, home.htm, or whatever. Then change all your internal links to go to home.htm when you want them to return to the true home page.

Thanks, Gene! I appreciate this. I checked for the page marker and it says it will be an index.htm page.

Come to find out that they have not completed getting 2 of my sites out from under my old host yet. The old hosts "under construction" sign is still on them! Plus, I have 2 other sites being hosted by the new one. One has the marker up and the other has the server error marker "Page cannot be displayed". Ugh!! I guess something is wrong.

Are there any magic words for getting these hosts to hop to it? <G>

Thanks for your help. I'm sure I'll be hanging around here! By the way... They say I'm a "junior" member. Ummm... I'm WAYYY over 13, even 18...
