URL path created by DB value - 3/12/2002 21:55:07
I'm working on a DB driven "hosting" site. Say that my site's URL is www.mysite.com. I would like members (like "bob" & "tom") to have their own pages at www.mysite.com/bob and www.mysite.com/tom. Of course I can do this by creating a directory called "bob" and another one called "tom". In each directory I'd have to put an index page that calls upon the DB. But I'd really like to do this without my personal intervention. When the member signs up (say using Spooky login) then somehow a URL is instantly available to them at www.mysite.com/membername, or it could be www.membername.mysite.com, or any other similar URL. How can I do this? I only have very modest coding skills. I'm using an Access DB. You could have a look at the FSO, but there are inherent dangers with allowing scripts to create directories etc. Its really the only option, but not one Id recommend. §þððk¥ Database / DRW Q & A VP-ASP Shopping cart Spooky Login

I was just talking to a friend tonight about this issue. He is somewhat familiar with ASP. He thought there was a way to strip a value from the URL. For instance: 1) My URL is www.serenitynetworks.net 2) The user's username is "mychurch". 3) The user gives out their URL as "www.mychurch.serenitynetworks.net". 4) An ASP code, something like request.server.variable... can extract "mychurch" from the URL and then I can use that value to call mychurch's information from the DB. Will this approach work? Also, just for jollies I tried going to www.mychurch.serenitynetworks.net and was taken to Microsoft's "We can't find..." page. How would I get around this problem? Thanks, Andrew webmaster@serenitynet.net - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control..." Gal. 5:22

I think that as you have created a sub-domain you will need to create a DNS entry for each members area. I beleive that you can achieve this through scripting, assuming that you have your own DNS server
