Is it free to list your site with the major search engines (yahoo, aol, msn, google, etc)?

Not all of them. There is an introduction to the whole procedure here that you may find useful: http://www.outfront.net/tutorials_02/business/se_intro1.htm

...and when you're done reading the tutorial, go to this addy -- you might want to bookmark it for future reference...

Did you notice that the webmaster tried the ol' "hide the first text on the page for the search engine" trick. Its that first line of blue words up in the clouds. That has actually worked for me but not in the engine ranking, in the listing description!

Mmm. You need to be pretty careful with that trick. The search engines cop it and you will be downgraded at best, possibly dumped for spamming. And they are getting better at detecting it too. It will also put paid to any hope of a Yahoo listing.
