spk1212 -> (PowerPoint Slide Show) Click Here to Download??? (3/13/2002 18:29:26)

I want to put a *.pps slide show somewhere in my site (NOT EMBEDDED) but as a downloadable file. I want to have a link that says:

"To view a short presentation click here to download. (5MB)"

Which would then bring up the download dialogue box and allow the user to specify where to save the file.

Please: How do I set up the "download file" feature that we have all seen a thousand times on other websites?

I'm pretty sure a powerpoint presentation downloads automatically. Just make a hyperlink to it.

It has been a while since I have used PowerPoint, however I do remember that .pps is the FINAL project so a double click on the file.pps will "auto-run" the presentation.

So when you link to a file that needs to download, depending on the visitors browser settings they will have a dialouge box that most likely will ask them if they wish to OPEN or SAVE and if so where. Then their browser or Download Manager Application may auto-run the application.

You may have the application start right away since you have it on your hard drive. Well that is if you are testing the download link from the machine that has that file.

My suggestion...put the .pps and a .txt file in a .zip and the put that as your download. In the .txt just put a thank you for downloading link and instructions on what do with the .pps file as if they are not familiar with a .pps file.

Give that a whirl....

One thought is that you need to change the file type to a ppt.
File formats for saving presentations--
PowerPoint Show .pps A presentation that will always open as a slide show presentation
Presentation .ppt A typical Microsoft PowerPoint presentation

Another Thought--Did you make it "Pack and Go" to run on another computer? Don't know if this will work for you or not but I know if I want to run a powerpoint on another computer I have to Pack and Go. Just an idea. Here's my desk "cheat notes"

Package a presentation to run on another computer
Open the presentation you want to package.
If you want to copy your packaged presentation to a floppy disk, insert the disk.
On the File menu, click Pack and Go.
On the first wizard screen, click Next, and then select options on each subsequent screen before clicking Next.
If you want to include multiple presentations in the package, select the Other presentation(s) check box when prompted, click Browse, and then select several presentations.
If you plan to run the packaged presentation on a computer that does not have Microsoft PowerPoint installed, include the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer in the package.
How?
On the fifth screen of the wizard, do one of the following:
If the Viewer for Microsoft Windows option is available, select it, and then continue through the wizard.
If the option isn't available, you need to install the viewer. On the same screen, click Download the Viewer to link to the Microsoft Office Web site and install the viewer. Follow the instructions to complete the download. When it's finished, close the browser window, and then, in the wizard, select the Viewer for Microsoft Windows option and continue through the wizard.
On the last screen, click Finish.
Notes:
To view your presentation, you must go to the location you copied the packaged file to and unpackage it.
If you package a Web presentation, it is unpackaged as a Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt) file rather than a Web (.htm) file.
In the wizard, if you choose to embed TrueType fonts, keep in mind that the wizard cannot embed TrueType fonts that have built-in copyright restrictions. It's a good idea to preview your presentation before you show it to see if you have all the fonts you wanted.
The viewer is not available for packaging if your presentation is password-protected. You cannot run password-protected presentations in the viewer.

I'm pretty sure also that a powerpoint presentation downloads automatically if there is a hyperlink to it.
Just some suggestions.

If you double click a .pps file it will run the Slide Show. If you double click a .ppt file it will open up in PowerPoint, which is not very professional.....

Thanks gang!!! I'll work on this today and let you know how it goes.

Sorry, I haven't worked with PowerPoint much. I wasn't aware of the .pps extension. I know the .ppt extension downloads (and as other users pointed out, then opens in PowerPoint).

You can zip the file and then it will download without opening in an application (except their unzip program).

I' ve been trying to include a PP presentation in an already existing page.

I' ve used the publish method from within PP But:

1. I don' t get any Next or Previous Slide buttons and
2. I get the outline on the left, which I don' t want.

Any hints Thanks

why not have one link to the pps with text '(5mb right click to save, "save target as" )' then users who don't know how to save stuff to their hard drive can choose either to open it (click) or save (right click)

Many Internet users don't have PowerPoint, but your readers can download the free viewer from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=428d5727-43ab-4f24-90b7-a94784af71a4&displaylang=en
