fav.icon mystery - 3/15/2002 14:59:06
Hi All, As the snow falls outside, I am led to ponder the mystery of why after bookmarking a website with a fav.icon, and then it showing up in my favorites with it's little icon, said icon would disappear after about seven days? The bookmark itself does not disappear from my favorites, but the icon just reverts back to the standard IE icon. This really bugs me. I am sure it's some sort of browser issue--if anybody has any insight, I'd appreciate it. I am running XP Home on a year old Dell. Thanks kids, Maura

If your browser is set to clear history in 7 days, that would explain it. Using favicon.com is not very dependable in this and other ways. More info at www.favicon.com Linda

Hi, actually my history is set to clear after 40 days. But I did follow the link to favicon and read this: quote: In Internet Explorer, the implementation of favicons is a little more vague. We are not sure of why they appear sometimes and sometimes they don't.
Not that it answers anything, but maybe my situation isn't that unique after all. It all seems a little iffy to me. I worked hard to create nifty unique icons for most of my sites, and now I wonder if it's worth the effort! Maura

They also vanish if you clear your browser cache. It's a pain. I stopped doing them for client sites because they were so happy with the "little extra" when they saw them at first and then would drive me nuts wondering "where'd they go?!". I find it easier on me not to do them. Jego

i put the script in the <head> tags It's been ages since I've done this, but as far as I can recall you only need to create the icon (in an icon program!), name it favicon.ico and place it in your root folder. If your server doesn't support it... www.favicon.com/#1-10 Linda

If they changed the favicon or simmply upoaded it again (altering the timestamp) would it then take the browser a couple of days to sort it's head out?? I get this occasionally.

Sometimes you might be stuck with either your own browser's cache or your ISP's cache. You can clear your own but if it's your ISP then you're stuck for a couple of days. If you change it and are trying to look at it in IE then first off, try dragging the little "e" icon or the old favicon in the url bar - this sometimes makes the new favicon appear.

Please note that first is a domain forwarded to second (url), may by anyway a forward domain(masked) have a fav icon , or this is impossible ?
