Windows XP Professional Slow on Netware 5 Network - 3/18/2002 8:15:05
Forgive the double posting (I've got this posted in the lounge as well), but I need help! Hello everyone out there in outfront land. I've been experiencing a rather annoying problem with Windows XP on a Novell Netware 5 Network. The problem manifests itself as a 40 second delay when 1st trying to browse the computer. If I log into the local workstation or the domain rather than the Novell Network I do not experience any delay when browsing. The only way to get rid of the problem and login to Novell is by disabling netbios. The problem with that is by disabling Netbios I can't connect to the domain. Some people have suggested registry changes and a couple of protocol modifications but so far nothing works. This problem is one that is happening on every XP machine in my place of business (Over 150 currently). Can anyone help me out with this?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Hi Kevin,

Did you find an answer to this problem yet? Is your Netware server using IPX/SPX?

I only have a few Win2k boxes on a Netware 5 server. No problems....

Are you using the Novell client for logging onto the server or the MS provided one?

Also remember seeing a MS article about Win2K (XP also maybe?) looking for scheduled tasks on the server before authenticating. This can take up to 30 seconds or more.

Rian, I also read the article about the sheduled tasks but I have to say that the Win2K machines that we have here do not experience this problem. As for IPX we aren't using it anymore, we are strictly IP now. Any suggestions?

How about the Client? MS or Novell for login and which version?

Tried both clients and have tried Novell's 4.82 & 4.83

Yikes! Maybe it's time to get the vendors involved... You might have discovered a undocumented "feature"!

As expected!

Have you tried barking up the Novell tree (no pun intended) yet? Anything in their Knowledge base?

Amen!
I haven't had much luck with the Novell Support Pages yet but I am still looking. Thanks!
