Newly designed template 4 elementary school - 3/18/2002 10:00:42
Well, outfront was my startingpoint in the world of connecting databases to the web. Since I've mastered the art. Frontpage 2002 is now only used for arranging complex tables. (unbea"table")

Ok, I'm strapped to my seat. Hit me with your critiques....
p.s. win98 PWS on cable. So relax.

Dunno what your comment is all about? This site loads lightningfast and has a top menu. Some topmenu items show a new submenu on the schoolboard!

Please clarify!

Well, I changed machines and now all I get is "This page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them".

So, back to the other box and I get a page with: Aruler? across the top (no text), a geen chalck board on the left (no text), 2 graphics with some text and three yellow 'notes' - no links - no navigation of any kind...

And, on a T1 it takes over 10 seconds here....

I had the same problem as Gil but the top menu was there the first time. After returning to the page, the top menu was gone. I refreshed the page 3 times and menu was ost in action. Also, took 45 seconds to load on my 56K connection.

IE6 on Win98SE

Ok, I guess that wanting critique and then pointing to a win98 P133 PWS server on Cable was not such a good idea.
I've just dumped my cache and tried again from my work (2 mbit line). All keeps on going right for me. Aaargh hate when this happens...Please show some faith and refresh once more!

p.s. the top menu (just under the ruler) and schoolboard are made in flash.
The yellow post-it notes are filled with data from an acces database. The contents of the main body is plain text with 2 pictures. All style is controlled by a CSS file.

OK, I cleaned out my temp files and went back to the site. The menu was there. I left, went back and it was gone again. Refreshed 5 times and couldn't bring it back.

Also, the chalkboard doesn't display entirely. It is cut of right below "Basisschool" with only a hint of the words below. It didn't scroll at all to show me the entire image. Set up at 800x600.

Well thanx again for trying again.
The problem is definitly the server.

The other issue, the "cut-off" schoolboard is going to be fixed. I've designed on 800x600, but for some reason I've discarted the fact that the toolsbars in IEx differ from person to person. I'm going to raise the board by rearanging the frames. At first I needed the top left space for the school logo, but I'm going to place that somewhere else. There is to much submenu text going onto the schoolboard that I can't shorten it.

I'll try to put it on another IIS server so you all can keep on hammering me down. :)

I wouldn't call it hammering...just helping

Let us know when the fixes are made. Nice concept and layout, though. Wish I could read (interpret) the text!

Refreshed and refreshed and refreshed - still no navigation.

Ah, a flash menu with no text alt.! Ok, so no one I work with (26,000+ PCs), will be able to use this site. Good luck...

Good hammer there Gil,
I'll immidiatly will update the menu's with ALT tags.
So that also raises a question.
Can I presume that everyone or at least the majority has Flash? I realy hate those flash/shockwave pictures telling people to install. They graphicly don't fit in most designs and most site I build have a newspage as the entrypage.

I don't think it is safe to depend on shockwave/flash for navigation no matter what % "seem" to have it installed. As I said here at work no one can get it.

But, I think a bigger you issue you need to deal with is the <NOFRAMES> content....

Ok Gil,
fortunatly the users of this site (parents, teachers and students) will be using IE5 and up. So it's good to consider the target group and their "hardware".
Can't get focus on the frames problem though. Never had this problem reported from customers. This is a default frames page created with Fp2002. Most browsers support frames nowadays (or not?). There is some ASP in the frames page, but only to set the "main" page destination, that depends on a parameter that is optional at this stage.
I am (still) planning to even create more Flash(y) menu's in the future!
What's the reason that 2600 clients don't use Flash? (very interested!)

Back again.

First, flash is something you have to clutter your 'puter with. I have it so I can see the menu but not everyone has it so you need to convince them to download it to see your menu work.

Second, I don't do frames in design because you have to make sure that frames can be seen.

Why do Xtra work?

What you are doing with your site can easily be handled in tables without all the extras.

You have a very good concept of design but take into consideration folks that run the basics.

I like the design features but I can see everything. Some folks can't and don't know how to do it to see what you are trying to do.

On the run.

Rangler,
I see your point in making this one frame-less. Going to try that one. The reason I didn't use the single page option is, that mostly only the contentframe will change and the rest of the page wil sit nicely and wait for further instructions. In a single page design the entire page would completely clear and then rebuild everything. Opticaly I don't like that. (especially with those people that have a slow puters where the rebuild takes even longer)
In my design the paper background is quickly drawn and then only the requested data is rebuild.

(This is an opinion, I don't want to press it here!)

That's 26,000 not 2600 and because of the security issues with ActiveX applications.

I dont see any reasan to use Flash for your nav. Other than the red line on rollover it doesnt seem to do anything else. You could accomplish the same effect with .gif rollovers and those behind firewalls like Gil could still enjoy it.

I do like the site, however:)

Using Flash for the menu's gives me the advantage for the endusers to create their own menu's faster and without the need of an graphical tool. But still being able to use embedded fonts.
It's a testing ground for future design decisions though!
The website is build ou-of templates thatare filled with database data that has a webenabled admin tool. The "plain" pages are filles through FP using templates.
