MS Access Probs - 3/19/2002 16:13:33
I use a fair bit of Access on my server. Recently, anbout once a week I get the following error: Database Results Error [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0x650 Thread 0x9c8 DBC 0x194ba024 Jet'. When this happens I write to my hosts and they fix it. E.g: "I restarted the server and everything appears to be running now. You might want to think about switching to SQL2000 instead of a ms access DSN. Have a good day." Any reasons why I would keep getting this error, and what should I do? Thanks

Access is only designed for a small number of connections... Are they offering SQL server free or for $$$ <spellcheck> </spellcheck>

I only have about 5 access database in my web, each with one table and about 100 records top, so I don't think size is the problem (correct?) It is only the frontpage databases in my web which stop working - non FP accesses DB still work. SQL 2000 costs $30 extra a year. The cost isn't the problem - it's just I have no idea how SQL works, and compatibility issues with FP.

It's not the size of the Database - it's the number of people accessing them, about 20 and access chokes. Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our Specialty Find a Web Professional

Some of the others have more SQL experience than I do - but from what I've seen SQL server will handle a few hundred or more. Frontpage has nothing to do with it. Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our Specialty Find a Web Professional

Is this where to answer thread? quote: I recieved an email from my hosts today with the following: I rebooted the server again, do you think you could try using another MS Jet driver version? It appears to be which ever one your using is killing itself. Please can someone translate for me! THanks!
MS Jet is the underlying code that makes the database work. In Access case it is designed to (try to) be small and fast, unlike SQL server which is designed for many simultaneous connections and queries. Also in Access and web, I believe (could be wrong) that for each query two connections have to be maintained!. You can update the Jet driver with an Access Service pack or from MS, but it probably won't be enough <spellcheck> </spellcheck>

The access service pack is apllied to my copy of MS Access on my hard drive I assume (not server side). Where can I locate the update? Thanks
