Have I been hacked? - 3/20/2002 8:07:20
A banner 'Download Free Web Utilities' is popping up all over the web. It brings up a casino. I don't know if I've been hacked, or my ISP.
Any words of wisdom?
Thanks,
Sarge

Well that certainly is the most useful utility I've seen for a while .
Who's the ISP? URL?

Could be either. Need url & isp info.

Many hacks are more adventurous - not a casino.

When I say all over the web, I mean the WWW, not just mine. Even Microsoft.com is now advertising this casino!
The source could be from within my computer, or it could be coming from my ISP (broadband.blueyonder.co.uk).
All very mysterious.

Sarge,
For what it is worth, I doubt if it's a hack. Everyone and their dog on free sites are advertising the casino! Even major sites are now using pop up advertising. I couldn't believe it when I went into the ABC or CBS news site (can't remember which one) and there were so many popups I just finally left. The casino was there probably 4 times.

Since I don't get it on a majority of sites I think it is site specific.

Hope I'm right......

Paula

It's not just you. I've noticed this too! I'll close one pop-up, just to get 1 or 2 more! It totally sucks! I hate "cleaning" up their garbage to see what I want!

I thinks it is a bad java/mime or some weir script bug in your computer. malacious code as one might call it... i got the same thing, banners poping over normal site banners, banners that don't belong or are no way affiliated with the site i seeing. What i did was disable script, embedded objects and mime objects from talking to my computer and it went away. I think we are seeing a new way to advertise, crule as it may seem very effective .

Hi Sarge,

Doesn't sound like a hack or any form of virus I've heard of. More likely to be adware. download ad-aware from:

www.lavasoftusa.com

and let it take a look!

Thanks Mark-
I downloaded & ran it today, and it picked up & deleted some crap that's been on my machine for some time (although it didn't cure the problem).
-Looks like a really useful download. (Can't believe its free!)

Hi, I subscribe to ZdNets Ancordesk newsletter & they had an interesting article similar to your problem.. the blurb was
"Online advertiser Brilliant Digital Entertainment has figured out a way to use your computer's storage and processing power to create an online ad network. "
and you can read the whole article at http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2859775,00.html
