Hey, server dudes! Had the opportunity to set-up a home network using one of those D-Link cable/dsl routers. Boy talk about quick and easy. Here's the set-up

ISP/DHCP server
|
>TCP/IP
|
>Surfboard-Cable Modem
|
>D-Link/DHCP
|
> workstations(4)

req's: network card and cat5 cable from D-link 704 to each system, small knowledge of network control panel. All of the settings are server assigned so there's very little set-up...everything I tested worked (including AOL)

Could you come over and do it for me now? ;-) I've been wondering about how difficult that would be. I think the biggest problem would be getting the wiring where it needs to be.

Nice job Caywind, maybe one day I'll give my 56k modem the kicking it deserves and get me a proper connection. I take it you've got a firewall in your setup somewhere? Although the router will help I guess!

Will you be hosting from home then? Would love to hear about the performance? Am thinking of the same thing!

If it weren't for pick-pockets, I'd have no sex life at all!

Router has a firewall built-in. I looked at the settings and they are pretty good. ISP also has a firewall but it is very basic.

I had considered hosting from home but the uptime and performance ruled it out (256k out). My ISP now offers a static IP address and I am considering using it but just for kicks or testing.

If anybody wants to goof around with "home-hosting" I have a Windows2000 Server evalution CD. It is supposed to be only for 120 days but it keeps working after that anyway...or you could use Linux. I guess PWS could actually work but the number of connections is limited...
