Links Bars dont' work on 2000 extensions - 3/22/2002 8:13:30
I just singed up to a new server where they are supposed to have FP 2000 extensions installed. I am using Link Bars created on FrontPage 2002. My link bars don't work on the site. In fact when publishing the site, FrontPage tells me the site I'm publishing to does not support Link Bars.
I have published the same web on Geocities with no Link Bar problems and they have FrontPage 2000 extensions installed also.
Any ideas what might be wrong?

Dave according to MS the "Custome Link Bars" require the 2002 SE

Is this the exact same site you had on the other server or has it perhaps been modified? Of course there is this.

Thanks for the reply Mike.
Yes, this is the exact same site as the other one on Geocities, no modifications. I would love to give you the URL, but it's for a small company and they don't' want to let the cat out of the bag yet. I am using includes pages and shared borders, and they work fine, so I am assuming 2000 extensions are installed.
I didn't know link bars needed 2002 extensions; didn't FrontPage 2000 also have link bars, or does the word "custom" make these links bars different?
OK, knowing this, I have many questions.
1) If I need 2002 extensions to use the custom link bars, then why did they work fine on Geocities where 2000 extensions are installed?
2) I can put my links in manually, but is there an easier solution, like a different kind of link bar that doesn't need 2002 extensions?
3) Is there a way to set up FrontPage so I am unable to use features that need 2002 extensions?
Your help is appreciated

I actually don't have my navigation structure set up at all. So I'll set up my navigation and give that a shot. I'll let you know how it works out.

How accurate is that DNS Wizard? I tried it and it says I DO NOT have extensions installed. ( although my provider claims it has been verified, and they are there).

Honestly, I've seen it be wrong before but very rarely. You might try again later that sometimes works. I (fairly) confident your ISP knows what's installed.

I dont know to much but I recently had a similar problem. I had to open the web through fp2002, go to navigation view as it was not showing anything, I dragged and dropped from the folders pane, arranged it how i wanted it, page view next and created the links with format-shared borders, my case all pages, top, inc nav. Then link bars based on navigation structure. Hope it helps, it worked for me anyway. www.thevoicesmyhead.com

Thanks cynic, I just changed my web site so it's based on the navigation structure. But now the style isn't correct. I set up the links so they look like this.
Link * Link * Link
On my local drive and on Geocities they look fine. But on the server I'm using they look like this:
[Link] [Link] [Link]
It does' t seem to matter what formatting style I use they always have the same formatting you see above.
I'm also having trouble with forms (this could be for another thread) the submit and reset buttons don't work. I set up the form "live" on the server and I always get this same message when setting up email.
"This form is being created on a Disk-Based Web or the FrontPage Server Extensions have not been configured to send e-mail. Please direct your system administrator or Internet Service Provider to the instructions in "Setting up E-mail Options on Windows" or "Setting Up E-mail Options on UNIX" in the Server Extensions Resource Kit. If you do not have the Server Extensions Resource Kit, you can find it at http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/wpp/serk."
When I set it up to send it to an HTML page, It simply does' t function at all; the reset button doesn't work either. Is there something THEY have to do to get all these functions to work, or is there something I can do on my end?

Understanding that you can't release the URL...can you give the host info. Some Hosts don't allow form to e-mail from FP, quote:

Well, I was just to told to use an external form handler, which really urks me because FrontPage extensions was supposed to take care of that for me. I guess I now have to learn how to implement scripts. My links still don't work correctly either, so I'll have to write my web site without the use of link bars.
I might as well not have extensions installed!

Just out of curiousity...what exactly is a "custom link bar"? With "shared borders", NAV bars and includes it seems to just add more complexity...

A "custom link bar" enables you to add links without setting up the navigation structure of your site. Otherwise it works much the same way as basing your link bar (NAV bar....same thing) on the navigation structure you set up in "Navigation" view.
But your right I'm probably making this more complex than needed. Now that you mention it, I'm using an "include Page" and it works fine. I think I might try that for my links. That way if I make a change, it changes all the page's links.
Since I can't use the FrontPage form handler, I'll have to use a third part script. I've never implemented CGI scripts before. Know of any "simple" form handler scripts with easy directions I can use?

Well, as it turns out, my form was not working correctly because of something I did, not my host. I had copied a form from another site and was using that…..it seemed to work fine, but the submit button, reset button wasn't working, nor would it save the results to a file.
I erased that form and started from scratch and it seems to work fine now. The email function does not work but that's probably because my host doesn't have it set up for email. I can live without the email function for now, and simply save the results to a file.

Are you saying you don't use link bars then….always includes instead?

just depends on the need. I use includes if it's something that goes on many pages and could change, (contacts, phone #'s, etc.)
Navbars have a lot more options if you use themes.....
Actually, you can use a navbar in an include!
