PDFWriter – inexpensive way to create PDF files - 3/22/2002 8:53:14
I'm required to save many documents in the PDF format so they can be uploaded and archived. However, most of Adobes' programs which create PDF files are much more than I need (and too expensive). Adobe PhotoDeluxe 3.0 (4.0, too, I think) installs something called Acrobat PDFWriter. It is actually a driver which can be accessed through the print menu. All you do is open any document and select “print.” Then in the "printer name" area, select Acrobat PDFWriter from the drop down menu. You can tweak settings via the properties button. When you click print, your document is saved in the PDF format. That’s all there is to it. The feature works with just about every program I have on my computer. You may already have PDFWriter on your computer. PhotoDeluxe sometimes comes free with printers or scanners. If you need to create simple PDF documents without any fancy attributes, PDFWriter should do the trick. It really works! btw, I've also found that uninstalling PD does not uninstall PDFWriter (should you need to free up some hard disk space). Gail PS Users of Adobe Acrobat Exchange 2.1 for Windows or Adobe Acrobat Exchange 3.0 for Windows can download this driver at the Adobe website.

I also have been searching for a free or inexpensive pdf creator and have found two. Free: Ghostwriter/ghostscript. Get them via: http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/index.html You need to install both, then go through a two-step dance to creat the pdf. Inexpensive: Another program (which I believe uses the above as the engine) is PDF995 and the PDF995 Suite. The suite is a collection of three programs, PDF995, PDF995edit and Signature995. Each is $9.95 or $19.95 for the suite. PDF995 is the engine. PDF995edit is a program that you need to set options for the engine and Signature995 allows encryption and digital signatures to be added. You can get these through: www.pdf995.com The latter program is so easy to use that I usually just create my simple pdfs with that instead of opening Acrobat 5 and trying to cope with its settings. -Steve www.tiburonsoccer.org
