markpearcy -> Advice for people that connect with cable modems (3/25/2002 7:14:21)

Hi,

I connect using a cable modem (broadband) and when publishing web pages I always have to enter my domain username and passwd several times, at various stages of the publishing process. There doesn't seem to be much to check to ensure that NTLM handshaking occurs correctly when you connect using LAN settings in Win 98. When I used to connect with a dial up adapter there was a host of settings I could check. It eventually publishes but it is a little frustrating. I don't know if you have any advice. I have started to try modifying the site content 'live' but every change still requires my username and password. Would my ISP resetting the extensions help at all?

Thanks,

Mark.

they could try that but it probably wouldn't help...

you might ask them to delete the user account and then re-create it, it rebuilds the ACL's

Have you tried editing your site From a PC that is NOT on your cable connection?
Are you saying that with dial-up there was no problems?

Me thinks your cable connection could be the problem..... Any proxy connections (servers) between you and your web host?

I don't think it's specifically a cable modem thing. I work live for long stretches as well as publish through a cable modem with Win98 and only have to do the initial log in. Have you checked with your ISP (for server settings) and/or cable provider (for possible restrictions)?

ah reckon, tharfo'e ah's, ah reckon.

Hi Mark,

I think the problem lies with the server extensions on your ISP's server. I had this problem whe I moved to a new ISP. In the end I did a bit of research and emailed the article to my ISP. Ask them to reinstall the SE. I think that will do it.

Hi, Mark--

I work for a Broadband (cable) ISP. Although I'm not at liberty to say which one, it sounds as if you use a different provider. With ours, passwords are a little on the quirky side. Although not that critical with most features/servers, it's definitely recommended to have a minimum 8-place pw with ours.

Speaking of passwords, it would not hurt for you to change your password. Although this may not be the issue, it couldn't hurt.

Also, we do not use a proxy, hence NO boxes in the proxy area should be checked. If your provider DOES use a proxy, however, make sure you use it, of course.

On proxies, I've noted that there can be problems with duplication of checked boxes. For example, if you have "Use Automatic Configuration Script" checked, you might not want to also have "Use a Proxy Server" checked.

Good luck with this, Mark!

Phil
