Internet Security - 3/25/2002 17:29:42
Just how secure do you think you are while surfing the net? Are you on DSL or a High Speed Cable Connection? Do you have a personal firewall software installed on your system? For those of you who haven't given this much consideration, it may be too late. For those who have, congratulations on protecting your privacy. Here are some useful links for testing your system's security. I've also provided links to the best online resources for comparing the different software options for personal firewall protection. What does anybody know about the firewall that comes with Windows XP Pro? I have been using Zone Alarm Pro for some time, but have had conflicts galore since installing XP. I have a broadband cable connection, and when discussing this with one of their techs over a few drinks one night was told they often have problems with Zone Alarm customers. Have to admit I don't have a feel for XP's firewall and am doubtful about how good it might be. Thinking about getting a router and just going the physical firewall path. What are most of y'all doing?

Hey theinkjetguy, you might want to read more at the Personal Firewall Scoreboard. BlackICE Defender failed the test and has vulnerabilities... Authoritative resources for personal firewall security say it has leaks! quote: BlackICE Defender - Doesn't block unknown Trojans, Viruses, or Spyware
That's a scary leak. SEO Consultants Directory http://www.seoconsultants.com Edited by - pageoneresults on 03/27/2002 12:06:06

I have been using Zonealarm on and off for some time now. However, I have found that it can cause problems for those running IIS on their PC. Maybe I'm stupid, or perhaps just too lazy to figure out why it stops me from accessing my frontpage webs. If you do need a personal firewall, then this is definitely one of the best. Not only does it seem to rank higher than most others (including paid for firewalls such as Nortons personal firewall) in reviews, but it is also free for personal use. You will be surprised at how many times your ports are scanned by potential hackers, so some form of firewall and good anti-virus package with up-to-date definitions are a must. you can download it from: www.zonealarm.com If you are connected to the web via DSL/cable with your PC running 24/7 or have a network to protect, then you can't go wrong with the Watchguard Soho hardware firewall or the more expensive Watchguard Firebox If anybody out there has experienced the same problems as me with Zonealarm and knows how to overcome them, I (and probably others) would love to know. My computer is freezing for no apparent reason and randomly - whether I am running programs or not, on a daily and sometimes twice daily basis. I have Cable and ZoneAlarm installed and MacAfee - could ZoneAlarm be causing this to happen? I am at my wits end with losing work all the time.

Sorry to hear that Laurad. I did have problems with my PC freezing, but I'm not sure it was down to Zonealarm. I assume ctrl-alt-del didn't work? If it does, check to see which offending program is doing this. If you're using winnt/2000/XP, take a look under the processes tab for any thread that may be hogging your processor or using up the RAM. I suppose you could eliminate Zonealarm by going into its configuration page and stopping it from loading on startup. don't close it down and then try, as the service this doesn't seem to make a difference. If that doesn't work, try disabling McAfee. If none of these solve the issue, I suppose you'll have to start disabling other apps that load on startup to find the culprit. good luck! Try shutting ZAP down and see what happens. I have a little toolbar installed on my system called Power Desk that monitors my system resources. When I upgraded to ZAP 3.0 I noticed that the upgrade was now a major system resource hog pulling a whopping 17-19% of my resources. I've uninstalled ZAP and have changed to Sygate Personal Firewall because of the problems with the 3.0 upgrade. ZoneLabs does not offer any technical support for the product at the moment. I'm sure they've been buried with tech problem e-mails as the 3.0 upgrade wreaked major havoc with a lot of the users, myself being one of them. ZAP was a great little program up until the 3.0 release. The ad blocking feature and the cookie blocking feature produce unexpected results. If you are seeing plain text characters appearing on web pages where they should not be, then you have been bitten by the ZAP 3.0 upgrade. Be careful uninstalling. My uninstall froze twice and at that time I did a manual remove. From that point forward I was not able to do any installs of the product due to some missing linked file. This is where my major problems started with ZAP and their online customer service and technical support which is pretty much limited to automated responses and canned e-mail responses.
