Reveal Tags - 3/25/2002 17:45:18
Ctrl + / Use this feature while designing in normal view and you'll be able to eliminate a lot of your broken tags, improperly nested tags, wrapped tags, ending tags that are missing, etc... You should also work with your show all ¶ selected as this works in conjunction with the Reveal Tags option and will show you where your Soft and Hard Returns are at. You'll want to make sure that all ending tags are properly positioned, especially those </td> and </p> tags. If those two tags are hanging by themselves, you will see unusual spacing issues between cells <td> and paragraph <p> text. <td> Incorrect Example: <td>Content here... </td> <td> Correct Example: <td>Content here...</td> <p> Incorrect Example: <p>Content here... </p> <p> Correct Example: <p>Content here...</p> There is an art and science to using Front Page correctly and these are just some of the tips I've learned since I first started using the program back in 1996! Ok... now, I've been using FrontPage since forever and have discovered a lot of cool features but somehow this reveal tags thing had passed me by. (I never even noticed the paragraph icon on the tool bar and I use it all the time in Word.) This totally rocks! It's the coolest thing I've seen in a way long time. Thanks so much for posting!! It was in the 3/27/02 edition of OutFront News... (I don't think it's on this site yet - I got it in the mail yesterday.) Susan Dennis<BR>Seattle, WA<BR>http://susandennis.com

Agree with Susan. That is cool. I learn something new here everyday, but this is one of the most helpful things I've learned in a long time. Thanks! Paula The more I learn the less I seem to know.

There is another neat feature in FP2002 with the Ctrl + / reveal tags option. When viewing your pages, you'll be able to see where you have improperly nested tags and also Missing Tags. Look for the little yellow icons with ?'s on them and double click it. A dialog will pop up and tell you what the tag name is and whether it is a starting tag or ending tag. If you are not careful when designing in FP, you can end up with a host of these types of problems. Best thing to do is keep the reveal tags option on most of the time and you can avoid them before they get out of hand. I've opened prospects sites from IE just to check the HTML and man, what a mess! Broken tags, missing closing tags, just poor overall HTML structure in general. Sooner or later people will catch on, it just takes a little time and perserverance! SEO Consultants Directory

RE: Reveal Tags - 4/5/2002 12:38:22
I thought I'd stop by and reiterate the Reveal Tags option as I just had a client come to me who had a site built in Front Page. What a mess, I'll basically end up rebuilding the site from scratch because of the coding errors. I end up doing that anyway! Try to keep the Reveal Tags option on as much as possible. I know, it can be annoying at times and its just a simple Ctrl + / to toggle them on or off. Anytime you make changes, quickly toggle on to make sure all tags are in place and then save. One of the biggest mistakes I see right now are wrapping tags like </b>, </font>, </p>, </td>. Usually ending tags where people don't realize that there is a bug in FP and it automatically positions your cursor in front of the ending tag instead of behind it. Using the Reveal Tags option and Show Paragraph Marks will solve this problem and elminate many of the problems you may be experiencing with formatting. When you are in Reveal Tags mode, you can position your cursor after the ending tag and create your Soft Returns <br> or Hard Returns <p>.
