Using Forms/Bots in "Include" Pages - 3/27/2002 11:20:37
I would like to add a search form to every page in my web. I'm starting with the FrontPage search bot, but may switch to a more robust search engine in a few months.

I created a web page with just the FrontPage search form/bot, but when I try to "Include" it in each web page, it's "X'd" out and won't work. I can only get the search form to appear when I manually include it in each page.

Needless to say, it will become an impossible task to replace this with another search form when I have several thousand pages in my web in a few months.

Can anyone tell me if it's impossible to "Include" a form or bot within a web page? Thanks.

You're starting with a web page that you're going to use as an include? You do Insert > Component > Web Search > Open a page > Insert > Component > Include > Page > browse to that page > OK?

That should work but only on your hosted site. No?

I guess that page where you're inerting it is already included on all these pages? I don't know why that would cause a problem.

The search won't work locally. It has to be on a server with properly configured extensions.

Thanks for the quick reply. You can check out the pages at http://vu.iiaa.net

You'll see the FP search bot at the top of each page. What I would like to do is replace that bot with an "Include" statement that "Includes" a blank page with nothing but the search bot on it.

However, when I try that, I get nothing but a string of code displayed on the page where the "Include" statement appears.

You're right about enabling the extensions. They are currently not enabled on our server, so the search function doesn't actually work, but I would think the search form should still display. It displays fine when I imbed it directly in a page...however, when I put the bot in a blank page, then imbed it into the current page using an "Include," the search form doesn't appear, just code text.

Perhaps I should just give up and use PicoSearch or something.

I'm thinking that you're trying to do a mass search and replace inserting a asp include or some ther server side include tag.

I would think that works in the browser as long as the syntax of the tag is correct and the files using it have the proper file extensions (.asp if you're using a asp include.)

The traditional FP way to do it would be to use an FP include page.

The syntax for that would look like this.

<!--webbot bot="Include" U-Include="your_include_page.htm" TAG="BODY" -->

Nope, no ASP stuff...don't know how to do it. I'm a self-taught FP junkie who knows just enough to be dangerous. All the hundreds of web pages you see on our Virtual University site I did without anything fancy. Perhaps that's my problem...I'm just ignorant (though proficient in pumping out web pages :-).

I just used the Insert | Web Component | Included Content | Page feature using FP 2002. When I include a page that has nothing but the Web Search form on it, I just get a line of code when it displays in the page in which it is included.

Try this.

With that live site open, do Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks. Sometimes large sites need that to make global changes fully functional.
