Tags + Break = Problems - 3/27/2002 21:23:09
Here is another interesting tip for you FP fans out there. One of the first things you should do before setting up your web is to set your page preferences. You do this by going to... Tools > Page Options > HTML Source The HTML Source tab is where you can make or break your web. Years ago I got away from the typical tabbed or indented html layout. I now use a left justified layout and will use comments when necessary to separate content. View the source of my SEO Consultants Directory and you'll see what I mean. I have my page options set up like this... Formatting - Tags names are lowercase (Checked) - Attribute names are lowercase (Checked) - Allow line breaks within tags (Unchecked) - Indent: 0 spaces - Right margin: 2000 characters You want to make sure that the allow line breaks within tags is unchecked. If checked, you will typically run into the hanging </p> or </td> tags as mentioned in another tip I just posted recently. I also feel that unbroken tags provide a cleaner path for the search engine spiders, its just a theory! Everything else is left as shown in the below screen shot from FP2002. The FP2000 properties box will look a little different but contain the same information in a stacked tab format instead of one horizontal row format. Now, once you hit okay, all pages developed in that web will maintain those properties until you go back in and change something. When you do, then there is a somewhat time consuming process of reopening each page that has already been built with the previous preferences, and resave them going through a four step routine that I won't get into here. Best thing to do is work with an initial test page for your web. You can play with the preferences and see which ones you like. I would strongly suggest using the format I've got set up as it makes for some very clean and optimized html. It also puts you one step closer in the transition to xhtml. No prob, it gets a little tricky and once you get the sequence down it becomes second nature. While in Normal View go to Tools > Page Options > HTML > Reformat using the rules below (hopefully your new preferences). Now switch to HTML View go to Tools > Page Options > HTML > Preserve existing HTML. Before you Save you may want to strip out the two proprietary FP Tags. Once you do this, they will not reappear unless you right click on a page in normal view and go through the page properties tabs. Its the Custom Tab that will bite you. If you view that tab and then hit okay, you've just reinserted the two tags. SEO Consultants Directory Edited by - pageoneresults on 03/30/2002 20:26:55

An important tip about Viewing the Source Code of web pages. The default viewer on Windows is Note Pad. When you view the source of a web page, Note Pad automatically opens and displays the HTML. While in Note Pad, go to > Edit > Word Wrap and make sure it is unchecked. This will show you how the HTML is truly formatted. If you were to open that page using FP, the code would display as originally formatted. For example, tags will not break where they are not supposed to. When you have Word Wrap checked in Note Pad, the tags are not displaying the way they are set up. Note Pad is forcing line breaks and there really shouldn't be any breaks in tags! pageoneresults; When I add the keywords to my web site, I have not been running them out in one long line, rather I hit enter/return so I can more easily read what I have just input, (lousy short term memory). Are you saying I should change back to all keywords on one long line? Regards, Scotty

Hi Scott! It is recommended that there not be any breaks in any tags. If you have to scroll over horizontally too far to read the tag, its too long! My suggested limit is a maximum of 15-20 words. I try to keep it to 10 if possible. The keywords tag has very little value these days. The only real player in the market that looks at them is Inktomi. And even then, there is not much weight given to them. There are still smaller Search Engines that utilize them and that is why I keep em. Plus, some of my clients are hung up on the whole keywords tag thing so I do it to keep them happy. Don't forget, there should be no keywords in that tag that are not mentioned on your page. This is considered spam by some of the Search Engines. SEO Consultants Directory Search Engine Optimization Tips Edited by - pageoneresults on 05/03/2002 10:37:14
