SEO - Search Engine Optimization Part I - 3/29/2002 1:52:56
Primary Areas of Search Engine Optimization There are many areas that the visiting spiders (robots) look at when your web site is indexed by the search engines. These areas are also reviewed by the editors of various directories. My years of research and testing show that proper optimization of these areas is critical to a successful search engine optimization campaign. Here are the primary areas that are key to your online success: - URL
- Page Title
- META Page Description
- META Keywords
- Heading Tags
- Alternate Tags
- Hyperlinked Text
- Visible Copy
- File Names
- Directory Names
- Robots Text File
URL Uniform Resource Locater, domain name, website address, etc. Research shows that purchasing the right domain names for your business is a key element in search engine and directory positioning. Page Title This area is one of the most important factors when ranking highly in the search engines. These are normally 7 words maximum in length, no fluff, straight and to the point. This is what shows up in most search engine results as a link back to your page. <title>Primary Areas of Search Engine Optimization</title> META Page Description Equally important as the page title is the page description. The page description and keywords (below) are what is referred to as two of the primary META tags that are written into the html coding of your pages. The page description META tag usually consists of 25 to 30 words or less using no more than 160 characters total (including spaces). The page description also shows up in most search engine results as a summary of your site. Directories like Yahoo!, ODP and LookSmart, show the page title and description that you entered (and the editors modified) on their manual submission form. <meta name="description" content="Do you want top positions in the search engines? Here are the primary areas to optimize for a successful search engine optimization campaign."> META Keywords For those search engines that are META enabled, this is one of the most important areas after the page title and page description. This is where you list the keywords and keyword phrases that you think users will enter into a search engine query to find your web site. There can be a maximum of 744 characters (you'll probably never use this many), and there is a technique to the formatting of this tag. <meta name="keywords" content="seo search engine optimization url page title meta description keywords heading tags h1 alternate hyperlinked copy content file directory names robots text file robots.txt web site positioning strategies"> Continue to Part II > SEO Consultants Directory http://www.seoconsultants.com Edited by - pageoneresults on 03/29/2002 02:04:10

Forgive if I missed the answer elsewhere but sometimes I feel like I'm on overload with all the information listed in these forums. I'd like to know if meta tags, in general, should be placed in *all* pages in a web, or only on the home page. Thanks, gail Edited by - _gail on 05/29/2002 09:02:55

Hello _gail! META tags should be placed on all pages that you are wanting to get indexed to their fullest. I typically don't include them on contact pages or other pages that do not contain information of real benefit to the user. Each page should have its own unique.. 1. Title 2. Description 3. Keywords 4. Visible Content P.S. Sorry everyone for my lack of activity lately. We are busy getting ready for our much anticipated launch of the SEO Consultants Directory on 06.01.2002. I should be back in a few weeks, thanks! SEO Consultants Directory Search Engine Optimization Tips

Hi _gail, visible content is the text that the user sees visibly on your web site. If I were to use the term invisible (which would not be correct), then that would refer to the information behind the scenes, within the html that is not visible to the user.
