web spider listing - 8/21/2001 14:31:00
FP 4.0

Will a "top" shared border with descriptive text and keywords be the text that e.g., "Web Craweler" uses in its listing of my site?

The top border text (no links) is thirty-three words, and I have left and right borders with link text that I want to exclude from ths listing.

Everything that is in a shared border becomes part of the final page and will be read by search engines. You cannot include parts of a page for search engines and exclude others. In formation in the <head></head> section of an include page is omitted from the main pages and so putting a 'no robots' meta tag there will have no effect.

You can also have a look at your site as the search engines see it here: http://www.searchengineworld.com/cgi-bin/sim_spider.cgi

If you have a look at the source of your page you will see what the search engines see and in the order they see it.

Thank you for the "spider sim" link.
It does not find my "meta description."
But, its "spider text" does list what I want listed first. However, it lists all my crazy
left and right border links. Ergo, should I not have the left and right borders on my home page, and have the spider go to a "contents" page and "suck up" the more coherent links information therein?

I think you should not concentrate over much on metatags. Fewer and fewer search engines use them anyway. They are imporatant but they are not the be all and end all.

I am not really clear on what you mean by having your descriptive text (by which I assume you mean the description metatag) and keywords in the top shared border - they belong in the <head></head> section of the page itself. IF you have them in that section of the top shared border they will not appear at all, if you have them in the body of the shared border they will be visable to the world.

Increaing ly what gets good positions for sites in search engine listings is
a. Content which is focused and relevant and uses keywords in the page text. Keyword density here is important
b. Link popularity: Search engines assume that if lots of sites link to you you must have something worth linking to.

You will get very good information on preparing your site for search engines here: www.searchengines.com
