PWS and MMC - I am soooo confused! - 3/29/2002 19:20:27
I'm running Win98 and had FP extensions running thru MMC (can't remember when or how I set that up - ages ago.) I just downloaded & installed PWS. On install, received error re: MS Transaction Server (didn't install) & promptly ignored it. I don't think the two programs are talking. The MMC doesn't acknowledge PWS (book indicates it should automatically see it - ?) Also, in FP under file properties for my web, the box that says 'Allows scripts to run' is grayed out. From what I read, I suspect I have a problem with installation order. [on what do I base this? - just a swag!!] Can I safely 'turn off' Front Page extensions, uninstall PWS, then reinstall PWS and then turn on FP extensions? I really don't know what I'm doing here!! The reason I'm doing all this is so that PWS will run & so that I can set the prop's of my web to run scripts - all in order to install Spooky Login. Fortunately, I've not done anything with my web yet - I'm just hoping I don't have to do something hideous like an fdisk before reinstalling. Any words of wisdom for me, oh, Great Ones out there? please...again Penny, the hopeless one

Hi Penny: Cant help you out too much with MMC as evertime I open that I have a seizure followed by a bowel movement (i'll be darned if I can figure that MMC thing out either) but I can sggest you check your PWS version - for 98 it should be version 4 I believe - you can get this right from your win98 install cd. It might be that you've installed an earlier PWS version than 4. Best of luck!!!!

DON'T FDISK! actually it sounds like you may have orked the PWS install? Personal web server is a part of the Win98 install and therefore can be installed through Control Panel-->Add Remove Programs--> Windows Setup (tab)--> Internet Options--> PWS (check). The MMC is a thing MS came up with to let you be able to Manage your computer through one window. FP extensions still need a web server to install in. I would say that you probably already had PWS (or IIS) installed somewhere and can't find it? what happens if you search for PWS*.*? Edited by - caywind on 03/30/2002 02:19:33

RE: PWS and MMC - I am soooo confused! - 3/30/2002 13:11:38
Thank you, caywind! I wasn't serious about the fdisk - just threatening my machine. I have an HP that didn't come with 'real' Windows software - everything was a pre-load. All I have are recovery disks. I went through the Control Panel quite a few times, unselecting, restarting, selecting, restarting, but no PWS. Looked for files & folders - did searches & all - to no avail. Bizarre... So, finally I 'deselected' PWS from Control Panel, downloaded it from MS (part of an NT Service Pack) and installed it. But when I did that install, I think it messed up the Front Page Server Extensions in MMC. So.... I 'turned off' FP extensions in MMC and uninstalled PWS... Then with a 'fresh' start, installed PWS from the download, went to MMC that now acknowledged my root (or some such thing) - it's a bit of a blur now. Then in MMC turned on PWS. Settings then looked as they were intended to. From there it was just figuring out how to set up PWS with my existing web (I cheated and bought a book - couldn't find what I needed from the evil MS ) My goal throughout this was to be able to 'ungray' the little box in folder properties that said "Allow Scripts to Run." I GOT THE BOX!! [D)] My family thought I was nuts - jumping up and down yelling - I have the box! I have the box! Good thing they're used to me. (Actually there were 3 boxes instead of one after all this was done.) But now I'm ready to mess up Spooky Login some. Thank you SO much for your help!! I've posted a number of my incredibly basic questions and I've had such a kind response! I've also found out all manner of things from 'poking' around other people's questions. I hope some day I'll know enough to return the favor. Warmest regards, Penny Edited by - pmagas on 03/30/2002 13:13:32
