I've put a single table across the top of the page.
I've put a single column with multiple rows on the left hand side of the page.
My problem, I can't get the curser into the "body" of the page. Can it be done?
Also, spacing between text lines in the cells are huge. Tried reducing to single spacing but no difference. Should I try a diffrent layout or just give it up?

You might want to try this link - http://www.outfront.net/tutorials_02/adv_tech/tables1.htm

Yes you can make changes. Don't give up.

A few tips.

1. Before you put any tables in the page hit return a few times to create space below them

2. Your second table needs to be two columns wide, a narrow on on the left for your navigation or whatever and a wide one on the right for your main content.

3. Hitting return creates a new paragraph.
Hitting Shift+Return creates a new line without a new paragraph.

I did an image a while back which is really intended to show how it is possible to use include pages, but it also demonstrates a simple tables layout, so it might help. Have a look at includes too perhaps, that might be a useful thing to learn about now also.
