I am still a bit frustrated with the way this is working and I need some advice. I have two .wmv files on my website. I do not have streaming services. Both files are under 1 meg so people can download them with little wait.

Here is the problem.

Clicking the link always results in browsers trying to open the file as a webpage. For some reason browsers do not not that it is a video file and call up the video player.

What can be done?

Let me guess, you're on freehosting.com right?

Actually, no. I am using Interland, Inc. http://www.interland.com/ and am subscribed to the TrueBasic plan.

I did find a solution to the problem, though and it seems a little odd. Once I loaded the wmv files to the server, I changed the extention to mpg and it seems to do just what I want.

Here is my page as it stands now, followed by the video experiment:

And, I am discovering that tonight is the 3rd or 4th time in about a month that Interland and all of its servers seem to be down. Anyone know of a good alternative?

Ask that question around here and you'll a dozen or so good answers, but here are the two I usually tell people about. Both are around ten bucks per month and offer well in excess of 100mb of space and with FP extensions and just about everything you'd want I think:

phpwebhosting.com

readyhosting.com

There are slight differences bewteen them such as the databases they offer etc so check their faq pages good before you make the leap. Of course for 10 bucks a month you can't really hurt yourself too bad. I'm using php myself and have been there for about 3 months now and haven't seen any down time at all (as far as I know.) Very quick servers and just all around good people I think. A lot of folks here are using readyhosting and seem to like them although there was one complaint recently. I don't recall what it was about so you might want to search for that. The post was in the lounge and only a week or two ago if that helps.

Depending on the way a server is congifured downloading can be odd for certain file types. If you absolutely have to use WMV then I'd email them first and ask them about it. (Yeah, I know you knew that. )
