Comments on My Site - 4/4/2002 19:09:49
Hi folks I'm a new boy on the scene having just come across this sites and am very impressed. I have to revamp one of my site and so would appreciate any comments about it at the moment. The site http://www.alveyuk.com/theworldoflace/ I wrote for my cousin and we also have a backup site http://www.theworldoflace.com which in principle is the same but slightly different - more importantly it is on a different web host. Our thoughts at the moment are to add J-BOTS flowing image menu across the top or a static 2 level table on the left of the page, have a random display of one small image on the home page, introduce a free e-card facility using local Nottingham scenes (we have about 150 images sorted) and link it with a newsletter and list control. It really is time to tear it apart and start again so any feed back about what you think works and what does not will be great. Many thanks for your time and help. Ken Ken Alvey

Quite honestly, before you start adding more flashy bits, I think I'd look at the overall design and management of what you have. The focus needs to be on the products and on navigation. I don't think you need more *complex* and multi-layered navigation; I think you need *better* navigation. The products are currently overwhelmed by the background, and the thumbnails are not very good quality... which is unfortunate, as you have some very lovely images to work with, and some very lovely photos as well! Your shopping system is not particularly well setup, actually; it could be made better using the system you have. I would start over, using a cleaner template with better navigation, perhaps one of these: http://www.frontpage-art.com/yourcart1/ or http://www.frontpage-art.com/hand/ Something that works with and looks nice with your products, anyway. You could also get someone to design a custom template for you, which might be the best way to go. But, basically, I'm thinking lighter, cleaner colours are going to work better with your products and with your target market, which is presumably women.

Many thanks for your comments, they reinforce other comments we have received and thanks also for the links. Ken Alvey
