Web Page Download Times - 4/5/2002 13:03:10
Web Page Download Times - 56k vs. High Speed I still work under the assumption that at least 50% of my audience is still using a 56k or less dial up connection. What does that mean? Trouble, if you are not careful. I'm sure some of us wear many hats. In addition to performing SEO, I also do web site design. My goal when designing pages is to keep them under a load time of 10-25 seconds (this all depends on the graphics involved on the site) on 56k. How do I do this you ask? Very carefully! I already discussed tidying up your html by eliminating all the extra spaces, indents, tabs and line breaks. That is one way to trim your file sizes. The next area to concentrate on are all of your images. I've tested numerous graphics programs and narrowed it down to two; Macromedia Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop. I'll typically use Photoshop to do initial concepts using multiple layers for the various page elements. Once approved, I then take that Photoshop file, flatten it (merge layers), and convert it to .jpg or .gif or a combination of both. I'll open it in Fireworks and begin my slicing and dicing. The Fireworks interface is just like any other image editing program, but this one is specifically for the web. It has a host of features that other programs don't. What's really nice is that I can compress an image right to the point where there is visible degradation, then I back it up one step. This allows for maximum compression while maintaining crisp image quality. We can all get spoiled being on DSL, Cable, T1, T3 or greater. I've been working on Cable at home for almost four years and T1 at the office for longer. Working in FrontPage allows me to see what my page download times are based on selected connection speed which I have set at 56k. Some may not think this is that important. Well, think again. When that human editor comes out to view your site, especially Yahoo!, it better load within a reasonable amount of time or you risk being penalized for slow download speeds. In a side note, you can also use Optiview.com (subscription based service)that lets you know what images need to be optimized. In addition, NetMechanic.com also does this as a "preview" service. ------------------------- Trying to solve my problems...with your brains!

Thanks for the info. I have always planned for 56k dial up and tested accordingly for 28 sec loads. Checked the size of my personal site just now with Search Engine World's Web Page Size Checker. Wow! Thanx again.. the Shaman http://shamansdesign.home.att.net
