Help Please! Images too BIG! - 4/12/2002 12:47:20
Hi, I hope I don't sound too stupid. But I really need help. The images on our webpages are causing the page to take years to load. http://www.murer/biographies.htm At work on our T1 it loads o.k. From home on my 56k it takes years. I really need help on how to fix these images to make the page load faster. All help and suggestion on this website is much needed and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did you resize the pics prior to saving them into your web? If you save a large pic into your web, but specify a smaller size on the page it still uses the memory and bandwidth of the total image size. Oh yeah, dont forget the .com in your link! :)

Thanks for the response. I didn't save it to any certain size. Is there a standard size that is best for images? I appreciate your help. Mytruespirit

I loaded your main page in 16 seconds at 50 KB using IE 5. I hope that helps. Author of "How To Build A Website With Duct Tape"

I usually save all "pictures" as .jpg at 640 x 480 and have them open in a new window. There isn't a set size, it's up to you. Just remember to save them at 72 dpi for best screen resolution!

Find your original photos and re-scan them to the size you have there: 145 x 180. (I disagree with the 72 dpi resolution.) Scan at 36, 42 or 48 bits, (depending on your scanners cabability) at 300 dpi and then lighten (brighter) slightly using Image>Adjust>Levels; using the resulting histogram, move the MIDDLE slider to the LEFT until a satisfactory level of brightness has been reached. (save) Last, sharpen in the Unsharp Mask at the following settings: Amount: 100% Radius: .8 (that's eight-tenths a pixel) Threshold: 1 (or zero, see what looks best) Be sure the sharpening and scan settings are the same for each photograph. Also, try to get the top of that one guy's head back... poor cropping. Then, go to Image>Mode> and switch to 8-bits per channel if it is not already there. If it is, leave it. (It might be at 16 bits, which is too high to save for the web.) After you've finished all this, you might want to go back and do a slight boost (no more than +10) on the color saturation. Then, do a "Save for the web" and set JPG compression at 60% and your file size should be no larger than about 10 or 15 kb for each shot. Your shots will look bee-yoo-tee-full. Your key to getting good final results is the original scan. The 72 dpi setting is an old wives tale that is misguided information. Do a test of a 72 dpi scan, and a 300 dpi scan with 36 to 48 bit color depth turn on, and you'll see a marketedly different result. The bromide about the 72 dpi scan being smaller is true, but only by about 5% at the final product. The difference in quality far outweighs they slight increase in file size. ....´course, you can have pictures as big as you want by slicing them. As quick search of this site will find you many articles on this subject. Look after #1 and don´t step in #2.

I know that this is an old thread, but I have a question. Re this comment... " Your key to getting good final results is the original scan. The 72 dpi setting is an old wives tale that is misguided information. " ...doesn' t the " old wives tale" re the 72 dpi setting refer to the final web/screen image rather than the original scan? I would certainly agree that you want to scan the image with a higher resolution, but the final file save in your editing program should be set to 72dpi. ??? -S

tpsl, You' re right. That comment is concerning the final saved image. I always create my scanned images in the highest resolution. And after I' ve made the necessary adjustments, if necessary, I then bring the resolution and the amount of colors down to its smallest amount without losing clarity.
