SEO - Keywords and Keyword Phrases - 4/16/2002 22:13:32
This will be the second topic in a series of Search Engine Optimization Tips that focus on the core areas of optimization. Keywords and Keyword Phrases What is a Keyword? A keyword is just that, A KEY WORD. Meaning one word that is key or of high importance. What is a Keyword Phrase? Two or more KEY WORDS that are combined to make a Keyword Phrase. Now that we know the difference, let's look at how to go about determining the keywords and keyword phrases that you should be targeting for your web site. I'd like to use Mr. Brunt's Outfront as an example. Let's say that my site is not even built yet, we are still in the planning stages. I say that because... Choosing the right keywords and keyword phrases are the single most important step in optmizing your web site for top positions in the search engines and directories. This is a very important aspect of pre-planning the structure of your web site. When I optimize, I optimize everything, from the image names, to the file names, to the directory names, etc... Back to using Outfront as an example. I know that my targeted audience are FrontPage users from around the world. I know that I want to provide a community where users of FrontPage can come together with a common goal, to better their skills in using one of the best WYSIWYG Editing Tools on the market. And, at the same time, share their learning experiences with others. First thing I'm going to do is open up my copy of Word Tracker. This is a tool that I use to see what users are actually searching for related to my industry specific terms. I'm guessing that some of my targeted keyword phrases will be; frontpage forums, front page support, frontpage bulletin boards, front page tips, etc. I'll enter those into Word Tracker which will then search its extensive database(s) of search history. It will return a list of that term, if found, along with other terms that people are using that are similar, its really cool! You can also use the Search Term Suggestion Tool at Overture. The numbers returned are going to be a bit exaggerated and I use it mainly to get a quick glance at the terms people are using in their search queries. When I enter the keyword phrase frontpage forums in the search box, it tells me that there were 207 searches in February 2002. It also shows one similar term; frontpage 2000 forums, that had 44 searches. There were no other matching terms. Let's try another one, how about front page forums? That one returned only 1 result with 38 searches in the month of February. Hint, I am also targeting the term frontpage as one word and front page as two! Okay, one more, I'll do frontpage tips. Oh, that brought up a few more results, the search numbers are a little low, but that is okay. I want these highly targeted terms, I really do! Here are the results for frontpage tips. Mind you, Overture does not distinguish between singular and plural. Both return the same results. Upper and lower case don't make a difference either. Searches done in February 2002 315 frontpage tips 108 frontpage 2000 tips 37 frontpage 2002 tips and tricks 35 frontpage tips and tricks 26 microsoft frontpage tips Okay, hopefully you get my point. Choosing the right Keywords and Keyword Phrases is the single most important step in Search Engine Optimization. If your site is already built, and was not optimized from conception, then you will most likely need to prepare for a restructure. Without one, you'd be wasting your time unless you have a large budget for paid promotions! Use the Search Term Suggestion Tool at Overture and just start entering different terms that you think people will use to find your site. The results returned will show that term along with others that are being used that are similar. If it returns no results, its probably not a term that you will target. Please, feel free to ask questions at this point. I don't want this one post to become a small book! Now the next question is; what do you do with all those keywords and keyword phrases? Hehehe, I can't give away all the secrets at once, can I? SEO Consultants Directory Search Engine Optimization Tips Edited by - pageoneresults on 04/16/2002 22:29:27

I have a question... the overture tool which tells you how many searches have been done on key words and phrases is a great tool... do the other PPC search engines have a resource for finding out this information? If so does anyone know where i can find them??

When I set up my website on sharks I deliberately avoided using any references that might attract someone looking for porn. I have a page on how to differentiate shark sexes and I don' t see anywhere in the page source I used the word sex. Here is an e- mail I recently got -- The reason I am mailing: Since many companies, this one included, now have filter-software to weed out adult-oriented sites, and have a long list of words that MAY be in a url, (s*x being one of them), may I suggest changing the url for your " shark_s*x" link to " shark_gender" (or something like that) as I just got the memo from our company President flashed on the screen (you know, the one advising me of our work-place internet-use policy..:)))))., in other words, serious blockage..) when I attempted to go to it from your main page. Just a suggestion..... Tom here- The page he is refering to is http://www.newenglandsharks.com/ID%20shark%20sex.htm Somehow sex ended up in the page URL and is apparently blocking out some access to the site. How can I get sex out that URL without fouling up my website???- Tom

Hiya Capt., I looked at the source and found eleven references with " sex" in them. Just what is the actual page name/title? u-originalsrc=" _borders/S.James_Porb..gif" u-overlaysrc=" _overlay/ID shark sex.htm_txt_S.James_Porb..gif" src=" _derived/ID%20shark%20sex.htm_txt_S.James_Porb..gif" u-originalsrc=" _borders/FAOangelshk.gif" u-overlaysrc=" _overlay/ID shark sex.htm_txt_FAOangelshk.gif src=" _derived/ID%20shark%20sex.htm_txt_FAOangelshk.gif among others. It appears to be something in your images. I' m not sure what effort you' ll need to put into it to change the image name/reference.

Thanks Mike for the response There is nothing in the files or images in my frontpage setup that has sex in it. I looked at the jpegs in my files and they don' t have any references to sex in my computers frontpage website. It appears on the jpegs properties in the view source, because the URL of the page has been assigned to the images. I didn' t do that. I don' t have a reference to sex in the title or key words: <html> <head> <title>About sharks</title> <meta name=" keywords" content=" claspers, dermal denticles, gills" > <meta name=" GENERATOR" content=" Microsoft FrontPage 3.0" > Maybe a search engine or spider has determined that because I am referring to males and females (sharks) that somehow sex is involved and has put that 20% sex into that page URL. - tom

Thanks Mike. Some strange things happen on the Internet and with websites. I will have to learn more about how they assign URLs to web pages inside websites. I used my domain name for my first page (home page) then just hyperlinked the other pages to it. That gif by the way is by permission from the UN Food and Agricultural Dept. In any event keywords are important , and it ticks me off that by me avoiding the use of the word sex, it comes up in the URL for that page. - Tom

Have you actually gone in and tried to rename the page? Frankly it appears that the name is in fact " ID shark sex.htm" . Try renaming to " id_shark.htm" . FP should update the link information (or you could just run " Recalculate Hyperlinks" from the Tools menu)

Hi Mike You were right . There was a file in my website that had the word sex on it. I changed it to sharkID.htm. I didn' t realize that the URL info is not only from the title and keywords but also the name of the file that you have in your frontpage files. I also re-did the hyperlinks to the renamed page. Should be OK on my next update. Thanks again - tom
