michellie777 -> Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 10:08:10)

I sent out a welcome message to all my friends and family to view my site and my brother sent me a message saying it wasn't working

He got a screen with index files on it.
I can view my site in Netscape and internet explorer just fine...can someone tell me what to do..??
How embarassing!

Michelle/thanks in advance

your home page needs to be in the root and named index.html

michellie777 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 11:11:04)

Forgive I am not very good at this I don't know where to find the root file?

michellie777 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 11:14:18)

Thanks in advance for all your assistance

LB -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 13:22:21)

Your root is your main folder. Two questions... are you able to have Frontpage extensions installed on your server? (contact your host if you're not sure) And did you create a web by using New > Web or did you just create individual pages?

michellie777 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 13:45:53)

My host site is freehostingweb.com
they say they have front page extensions? I dunno if they are installed , I am assuming so because my guest book works and has updated stuff. As far as how the files were created I used personal web template (frontpage 2000) then added additional pages and attached to the web I think
Here is my site
www.poeticallyspeaking.com
thanks so much for responding back

This is a great site

LB -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 17:39:09)

I used personal web template (frontpage 2000) then added additional pages

When you used the template, one of the pages should have been named default.htm or index.htm. Do you have one like that?

In Frontpage did you use Publish to send the files to the server?

Linda

michellie777 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 18:19:31)

Yes,
I hhave a file named index.htm and it is still named this. In fact all of my files are .htm and I did publish with frontpage.
My hosting company has extensions. I just want to be sure what to do so I don't wreck all the work I have done.

Thanks
Sorry for being impatient and posting my question several times

LB -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 18:59:40)

There isn't a file named index.htm at www.poeticallyspeaking.com .

Try this again... File > Publish > http://www.poeticallyspeaking.com . Now it should ask you for your username and password.

When done, post and we'll check again.

michellie777 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 19:49:05)

It's doing it again showing index files?

I give up I am exhausted with this thing

michellie777 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 20:28:39)

Ok I read that I need to have my index file a HTML file....but where do I change this? Do i go into Frontpage right click on my index file and change the extension when all my other files are htm? It shows a message that some stuff can get lost in this. Then do I reload it to my actual site?

LB -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 20:28:46)

Sorry I missed it during the short time it was up.

If it was actually up and working and then down again, I would think it'd have to be something with the hosting... although I've never seen anything like that.

Once you get a response from the host, maybe they'll be able to help. Let us know if you get it fixed!

Linda

michellie777 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 20:31:55)

Linda,
please see the message before your last...and the site is up but i dunno for how long
Thanks so much
the hosting company has been no help

LB -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 20:56:53)

I still am not getting anything except for some basic files and folders.

If you were sending files by ftp, I'd think you were putting them in the wrong folder. If you are publishing through FP, then I really don't have any ideas. It is safe to change the index.htm page to index.html, even though FP will warn you whenever you change the file extension.

Linda

michellie777 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 21:25:14)

I changed the file to HTML the index file can anyone go see if it is working now?

www.poeticallyspeaking.com
Thanks Linda. It asked me if I wanted to delete the htm document from the root. I saidd no because I don't know how to retrieve if I need and I have heard that's not a good idea. I changed the index page.

Let me know if it works.

Michelle

LB -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 22:02:15)

You should not have both a index.htm and a index.html on the server... it can makes things confusing. Try opening the site live (open web > http://www.poeticallyspeaking.com ) and delete one of the pages.

Can you open the site live? If you really are seeing a working site there, I would then believe this has something to do with the DNS settings for the domain.

michellie777 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 22:13:23)

Shirley -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/17/2002 23:18:12)

I think your nameservers may be messed up

DNS15.REGISTER.COM 216.21.234.78
NS1.IMUPGRADING.COM 209.197.226.112
NS2.IMUPGRADING.COM 209.197.226.113
DNS16.REGISTER.COM 209.67.50.246

To open a web live: in Frontpage > File > Open Web > http://www.sitename.com/

If you cannot open it live, then either you do not have Frontpage extensions on the server or there is some other problem with the site that your host will need to help you with.

Continuing here allows everyone following to learn also, plus it allows for anyone with additional ideas to help out with knowing the background on the problem and what has already been tried. (btw - I've been working all day on a javascript problem of my own that I feel like banging my head against the wall with... some days are just like that with web design )

The major question here is can you see the web site working properly at www.poeticallyspeaking.com ? If you can, I would suspect a DNS problem with the domain itself.

Linda

Thanks, Shirley!

michellie777 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/18/2002 1:06:11)

thanks shirley and linda and everyone.
I filled out a help ticket on register for them to help me. I hope that they get it fixed or show me how to fix the problem.

Momx4 -> RE: Problem site is showing index files (4/18/2002 1:42:48)

Looks like it's working now.

I wonder if this is a case of
"you get what you pay for".

Glad it's working now, MomX4
