Traversing Tables - 4/22/2002 0:16:54
Good day everyone! I'm not sure if the title of this topic is appropriate, but it is the best description I could offer about this tip.

Enter and Ctrl + Enter

When you have the Show All ¶ selected (Ctrl+Shift+*), this will show you where all of your tables and cells are along with Soft and Hard Returns.

When you work with nested tables (tables inside of tables), you can sometimes lose your position, especially if you have "0" set for cellpadding and cellspacing within some of those nested tables.

A question came up from DaveO in the beginners forum about Controlling the bottom table in nested tables, that gave me the idea for this tip. I use this command frequently and I guess its become habit and I never really thought how beneficial it could be to the new FrontPage user.

Now, with the Show All revealing your table borders and formatting, you can position your cursor at the beginning of the content for the table that is in the very inside of the nest, the one in the middle.

Let's say you have four nested tables and you need to travel upward in the nest. You position your cursor at the top of the only table you can access after nesting them. Now, press Enter to traverse upward through your nested tables. If there are four, you will press Enter three times to position your cursor at the beginning of the first surrounding table. Press Enter one more time to break out of the nest completely.

Now, if you have content in those nested tables, you need to be sure that you position your cursor at the very beginning of the content of that table to traverse to the next table upward in the nest.

The Ctrl + Enter command works for traversing toward the bottom of the nest. Make sure that your cursor is positioned at the end of the content. If you have four tables, Ctrl + Enter three times to position yourself within the last surrounding table. Press Ctrl + Enter one more time to break out of the nest completely.

Here are some screen shots showing the downward movement through nested tables. The first one shows the four tables outlined in different colors for this presentation. Each table thereafter, shows where I've utilized the Ctrl + Enter command to break out of the nest and work my way downward so that I can be positioned at the bottom of the surrounding table.

Screen Shot 2 - Inside the 3rd Table - Green Border

Screen Shot 3 - Inside the 2nd Table - Purple Border

Screen Shot 4 - Inside the 1st Table - Blue Border
