Page Layouts - 9/10/2001 20:47:00
Hello, I am trying to layout my website and have noticed alot of sharp looking sites that I can't seem to figure out. One example is www.epiloglaser.com. How is the concaved sidebar created. I dont think that it is a background picture in a cell, since I copied the html and that didn't appear to be the case. Please help.

The links you see to the left are individually created image files. There are actually 2 images for each link with a mouseover effect added. You would have to create the buttons in some image editing software (like PhotoShop) then add them to your page. Add the mouseover effect and add the hyperlink. The HTML didn't work on your web because you don't have the image files in your directory. Check out the Mouseover Machine at the link below. Hope this helps.http://builder.cnet.com/webbuilding/pages/Programming/Kahn/012898/

David, I'm starting to understand. However, I'm still slightly confused. I understand that the individual buttons were created custom in a Photoshop type program, however what able the background behind the buttons. That seems to be one big image? It appears that the buttons and background are two seperate issues. Thanks For Your Help!

George,You are correct. The buttons are just a set of two images using mouseovers. DP make an excellent suggestion for those. The actual blue on the left, the yellow accent and their logo is one image and is specified as the pages background image(image name bg4.gif). Not asked but noticed, they used D*eamweaver and F*reworks to build this site. Brian

Brian & Dave,Thank you both so much. Now it finally makes sense to me. Now another question. Would I simply go to page properties and select a background file that I'd create in antohter program? Are there compatability issues with older browsers and backgrounds as in the mentioned example? Also, what is your feeling on using absolute positioning versus tables? The problem I seem to have with tables is that it seems as though you better know exactly how much info the page will have before you start, otherwise it would be a pain to go back and add pictures, etc to the site. Absolute positioning seems literally like drap and drop therefore making design changes very simple. What are your thoughts. Thank You Very Much
