Not a FP question, just my curiosity... - 4/28/2002 19:47:46
Hi

I am really curious about the answers to this question and figured I would start with you all! lol

Anyway, my husband and a friend build computers and set up networking, etc. and they think that the average "home" has more than one computer these days. I, on the other hand, think that there are still many people that cannot afford one computer, much less own two. So I decided to take a vote...how many computers do you all own??? I feel bad saying it - we have 7 (but it is only cause he builds them)
Thanks everyone!

Hi, Shawna -

3 pcs, 1 laptop ...but keep in mind you won't be getting many "average" households from the members here.

My extended family and non-net friends average 1 computer or none at all. My 85 year old grandmother has a hand-me-down pc, but she only uses it for email.

hmmm 3 currently networked, plus a spot for my daughter's laptop when she is here. One additional computer on loan to my brother, and another to my parents. Plus the usual variety of misc parts and equipment.

Yep sounds about average to me. *S*

Can we count the ones we have "loaned" to our kids never to see again??

Thanks everyone!

I'm sure you are right that we are not the average household. Guess we'll find out soon enough. I appreciate your answers!

Two PCs, not networked, and a laptop.

We would be above average in Ireland.

Plugged in and running? 3 Servers and 4 workstations. Unplugged? Not enough time to inventory right now.

sometimes I feel like I'm working with all three hands tied behind my back...

We have 3 PCs on a home network full time (one for myself, one for my 15 year old daughter, one for my 12 year old son) plus my husband has a laptop he brings home and hooks up to the network. My 4 year old daughter has an old hand-me-down laptop - not on the network. Plus several oldies in the garage. MomX4

3 PCs and a laptop all networked together. We are probably going to get another PC because a current one is really old.

2 PCs.
My wife never learned Windows, she hates Windows.
So we still have an old DOS machine in which she types in Professional Write.
She is designated Secretary of ever club in town. She types lots of meeting minutes and newsletters.

RE: Not a FP question, just my curiosity... - 5/12/2002 22:33:26
shawna,

I'm the President of a computer club with 350+ members. The membership is limited to folks that live in our age restricted community (55yrs+). Of the current 2,400 homes now occupied, I have email addresses for 1,258. Keep in mind five homes are completed and occupied each day!

As an in-the-home tutor, I know first hand that most have no more than one computer. In many cases, the computer was given to them by their adult children when they moved to our community. The grandchildren are now 2,000 miles away, so email with attached photos are important.

The club's classes are filled more often than not. The club can accommodate 11 students for each class that requires hands-on work. 90% are raw beginners, so the Mouse & Keyboard classes are filled.

I am guessing that the average is one in this community of upscale retirees with nothing else to do. It seems like one arises in the morning with nothing to do and by 10:00 one finds that he is two hours behind schedule

Enjoy! It's your endeavor!

We have three functional computers in our household, four in all. There is the family computer, my sister's computer, and my laptop...all of which are networked. And then there's the other one that hasn't been turned on in months. Let's just leave it at that.

don't think this is the right place for your poll, since everybody in this forum owns at least one comp. (webdesigners in here).

7 PC's working (4 laptops, 3 desktops).
  • Daily Use
    • P-III 500 Laptop

    • Citrix-333 Desktop
  • Weekly Use
    • P-I Desktop

    • x-586 Laptop
  • In Attic

    • x-386 Laptop

    • Mac 512 (works perfectly, but want to make into aquarium, so torn with indecision)

    • Powerbook 170 Laptop

ADSL on a home LAN, using both wired and 802.11b connections.

But of course most people on this forum have pocket protectors and beanies with propellers, even if they are kept in the closet when company comes.

Yeah I like that. My husband and I just threw away a very old mac that I decided would have been useless as an aquarium. The fish would have crashed just being inside it. Anyway, we have a tower, a winbook, a brand new gateway laptop, and a really old laptop that I can't remember what it is. So 4 here.

Isn't that normal?

Hmm..

5 I think at the last count. One for my 5 y/o son who is adept in windows (poor thing). One for my daughter (currently being rebuilt, as the kangaroos have a habit of getting in the house and trashing the PC's). 1 in my music studio midi'ed to the kybd etc.. 1 for the wifes emails, and lastly my daughters school laptop.

Currently building a server to complete the network and take the strain of the PC currently doing all that stuff.

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity

I have one desktop at home. However, my youngest daughter has a desktop in her room, my son has a laptop, and my oldest daughter just got a new laptop for christmas. So we have a total of 4 computers. We do not have any old PCs around, I give them to good will at the first opportunity. I barely have enough room for all of the kids, I certainly don't have any room for anything we don't use. I think most people with children will have at least one PC in the household for homework. It is required that most papers are typed and they need to use the internet often for research. The schools now include a computer on the list of school supplies.
