_gail -> html v lines / outside borders (4/30/2002 9:26:56)

How do you make an html vertical line, including width and color? I can insert an horizontal line via FrontPage as well as "outside borders" but I didn't hear about html vertical lines until recently.

I've used vertical graphic lines. How do you know when to opt one type of line over another (i.e. html vs. graphical)?

Also, I've tried using outside borders but can't seem to get rid of them once they've been saved after quitting FP. What am I missing? Thanks!

Gail

Hi Gail

Where did you hear about html vertical lines? I've never heard of this and always use a graphic. Actually, I use graphics for both horizontal and vertical lines because it gives me more control over what people see when they view the site with different browsers.

As for you borders question. Are you talking about a shared border or an include page?

Both horizontal and vertical lines can be made by using tables cells. Set the background for a row or column and insert a 1x1 transparent gif. Merge cells first or else you'll need to do this for each cell in that row or column.

AFAIK there is no html equivilent to the horizontal rule.

If by "outside borders" you are refering to table borders, these commonly are not cross-browser compatible.

A graphic vertical image can be used by right or left aligning it by your text.

I most likely misunderstood and therefore did not pose the question correctly. Thanks for the info on how to do this...I will give it a try.

I'm talking about the Outside Border features on the FrontPage 2000 Formatting toolbar.

I've tried adding a line to one side of a table using this command, only to open the page a day later and be unable to remove the line.

Hi Gail

Make sure you highlight your table before you go into the format/borders shading properties. You should be able to click on the little boxes to turn the borders off.

Hope this works for you.

Hello Swirl, you said...

FrontPage allows you to draw vertical lines using the Drawing Toolbar.

Thanks but I'm still using 2000.

Sorry, Swirl, I made a typo. I'm using FP 2002.

Pageone, are these drawing tools browser friendly? I took a quick look and they seem like they position absolutely. I've heard Netscape doesn't like absolute positioning. Hope I'm wrong now that I've rediscovered these tools.

NN handles absolute positioning differently than IE... if FP's writing the code for it, it's bound to be messed up in NN4+. I just checked NN6.2 and that looked much better but far from perfect. If you just gotta use absolute positioning and don't care about older versions of NN, still test what you're doing in NN6.2.

Hi Gail! I have not used the drawing tools in FP and probably never will. The code that is generated is just too laden for me to work with and I can produce similar results using graphics and/or cells with clear gifs.

I am in total agreement with LB on this one. Anything that is MS proprietary, I stay away from if I can.

I may set up a test page and see how the drawing tools fair in the multiple browsers, but I can assure you that NN4.x is going to choke on something.

There really is very little call for vertical lines. When they are required, there are proven methods on creating them, all which have been mentioned here in this thread and in a couple of other recent threads.
