Q. What are .asp files?

Problem Background:
I'm about to create an intranet site. I have been given access to files on the development server to 'play around with'.

For example I was shown an index.asp page which showed the basic page layout with top and left borders coloured black and rest of page in white. This page layout appears to be the basic template of the site I'll create. I don't understand why this page is an .asp file, as are a number of files on the development server.

Very grateful for any help!

asp is "active server page"
It means that the page MAY contain some form of script or coding.
This extension (.asp) allows the server to know to check the page and process the script before sending it to the user.

You can quite happily edit these files as if they were HTML in frontpage, but you need to be aware that some of the scripts (if there are any at all) may be hidden from your view in wysiwyg view.
