Hidden and _private folders - 5/5/2002 9:51:14
I created an "_inlcudes folder" and it disappeared! Found out quickly why that happened so I turned on hidden folders. I'd like to ask: what is the purpose of hidden folders? Why and when do you need them?

I'd also like to learn more about the use of the "_private folder." I do know site visitors can not browse them.

For example, I'd like to post a full bio at a site but would not like it to be seen unless someone requesting it is give permission to view it. Can a private folder be used for this purpose? If so how?

Thanks, Gail

Hi Gail,
I hope this doesn't sound wrong but the purpose of "hidden" folders is to hide things. MSFP creates hidden folders containing various site information such as shared border info, layout, etc. that isn't really necessary for us to see or to mess with generally. We can use them for the same purpose to hide includes away, pictures or whatever.
If you want to hide a folder simply put an underscore in front of the name "_mypersonalhiddenfolder"

ah reckon, tharfo'e ah's, ah reckon.

Mike54:

I'm still not fully clear on why something needs to be hidden if the folder can be browsed by site visitors anyway. At least one reason is listed in FrontPage Help (below) but are there any other reasons they should be used?

What I'm really interested in learning more about is the "private" folder.

If I place a page in a private folder can I give anyone else permission to look at it's contents without having to give the password to the entire site? As an example, what if I wanted to upload a full resume but don't want it to be seen by casual visitors? Can I give someone access to the file in that hidden folder, when needed? Or is a private folder simply for my own use, so to speak?

Folders that site visitors cannot browse

When you create a new web site, FrontPage creates a hidden folder named _private to store form results. Site visitors are not allowed to view the contents of this folder.

-------

Folders that you can't see when using FrontPage

FrontPage also creates hidden folders that you can't see in the Folder List, but which can be browsed by site visitors. For example, if you use themes, FrontPage creates a hidden folder called _themes to store them.

In addition to being hidden from FrontPage views, hidden folders of this type are excluded from the FrontPage search component (if the search is being performed on a server running Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions).

Gail,

You have just enlightened me on the hidden folder issue. I thought that any hidden file would function the same as the "_private" folder which apparently is not the case. As for allowing rights to view I would think that by placing the bio in the _private folder and providing a link only through a password protected area you could secure it. Of course I'm only thinking here and that as they say can be dangerous.
Oh, my use for hidden folders has been to keep things from showing up in Search or the TOC components.

ah reckon, tharfo'e ah's, ah reckon.
