I'm ready, have at it... - 5/10/2002 16:14:44
This is my first time asking for a critique, so please be gentle... A month or so ago, I asked for some help with creating a "preview box" for articles. I've gotten the site up, and would like for you to see what I've done. http://www.crossministry.org is the site and http://www.crossministry.org/Articles.htm is the page I've used your recommendations on. My client says he cannot see the entire "preview" text in the popup box. But all the machines I've tried it on work fine. What do you see? You "Outfront" people have been very helpful on several occasions. I appreciate your help. Stacy

Hi Stacey, I think the site works quite well. (Personally) I prefer a little more in the way of images and shorter pages (most hate to scroll side to side but I also don't like scrolling waaaaaay down a page) but you do have a lot of information you're trying to dispense. The biggest suggestion I might have would be to have the links in the "Agape Press" menu open in a new window rather than in the current window. Some visitors can get lost that way. ah reckon, tharfo'e ah's, ah reckon.

Stacy, I'm also seeing the text cut off. I'm on a fast DSL connection and the site seems to load very slowly. Wondering if anyone else had that problem. Paula So much to learn......

I took Mike 54's advice regarding the opening of a new window for the Agape Press links. I used: //Open offsite links in new window option- By Jessica Hammer //Heavily modified by Dynamic Drive //Visit http://www.dynamicdrive.com for this script It works well. It seems to remove at least one of the needs to use frames. Stacy

Could it be the news service (Agape Press)? Does anyone else use any other service like that? Stacy

sjt, Forgive me if I missed something but you could very simply set the links to open in a new page with FP. You didn't need to go elsewhere. ah reckon, tharfo'e ah's, ah reckon.

Hi Stacy, Looked at your site with IE 6.0, 28.8 on 56K modem and resolution at 800 X 600. (1) "Articles" loaded in 15 seconds - nice job considering my connection speed! (2) "Mailbox" - very long page, a lot of "white" space. You may want to consider consolidating it. (3) "Obedience" - 40 second load. Look at "http//www.crossministry.org/images/Family_Photo.jpg. The image is 88,814 bytes and slows loading of the page. Try to re-size the image. Also, as a suggestion, I'd suggest you use lower-case letters for page names and images. Updating the site in the future and missing a capital letter could cause problems. (4) "Schedule" - fast load, e-mail link okay. (5) Media_Featuring_Cross" - again, look at your image sizes. Slow load due to the bytes. (6) "Who Are We" - just a personal observation, but the sub-links make the link seem too "busy". Simply too many options to click on (I'm an old-fart.) Have you considered sub-links - indented links in your frame on the left? (7) "Resources" - again, an extremely long page. Any possibility as to breaking it up? (8) Endorsements" - another slow loading page. Check the size of your images. (9) I did not get a pop-up. Hope this helps, John Age has taught me the value of a hammer as to child-proof caps!

John, and all that responded, Thanks for your insights. I'll look at the pic's again. I'll see what I can do to reduce the file sizes. Many of the pages are "long" on text. Any suggestions as to how they can be "broken up"? Long articles I read on a news link, Time.com etc. use multiple pages. Is there a good "rule of thumb" to how long a page should be? Thanks again. Stacy

Stacy, All of the text doesn't appear in IE 6. The popup box doesn't appear at all in either Netscape 6 or Opera 6 In checking your site, I also discovered a problem with one of my sites relative to Netscape and Opera. The popup windows near the beginning of each chapter, on the page in the following link, allows one to scroll if the data is long enough and only exit when the reader desires: http://www.moderncabinetmaking.com/chapters_15-22.htm Now I've got to figure out how to fix my problem. I may have to come back in another section of this forum. Enjoy! It's your endeavor!

I should have mentioned this before, but I have observed fast page loading. Of course, I'm on a 1.5 MB cable line. Even MS executives in the Seattle didn't have that in their homes during last Fall's Comdex show here in Las Vegas. Enjoy! It's your endeavor! Edited by - Charles W Davis on 05/11/2002 18:52:40

Just a follow up on my previous comments on the popup windows that I use. I solved the problem of the windows not opening in Opera. Preferences were set to block popup windows. The popup windows that I use only appear at the user's request, not automatically. The user must click on a link. The popup windows do not interrupt the normal flow of reading. The links to the popups are at the beginning of a section of information. In my site's case, at the beginning of the introduction to each chapter's opening paragraph. Scrolling is kept to a minimum in the popup. The concept and discussion on creating these popups came from a printed publication called "Inside Microsoft FrontPage", Volume 4, Number 9, September 2000, Element K Journals. http://www.elementkjournals.com/mfp/ The publication indicates that you can download the code from their FTP site at: ftp.elementkjournals.com/mfp/mfpSep00.zip Enjoy! I've finally had the time to re-do the popup "Preview" on the article page. http://crossministry.org/Articles.htm Could some of you who looked at it the first time have another look? Especially those that found that the text was getting cut off? Thanks for your kind help on this. Stacy

I dont see another option for the popup other than the scroller. Its possible the client has the text size on his browser set to something other than the default medium. Troy | www.aplustemplates.com
