Client wanted a fairly monochrome site with a simple layout. I just feel there is something missing but I don't know what - the pages seem somehow dead looking.

Two versions - one with a gray bg for text the other white. There will be a lot of text in this site so reading ease is important.

No links or anything work.

Any suggestions?

Hi Katherine,

It's actually a subtle difference (or I'm a bit thick this AM). I didn't read all of your post before clicking and sat here wondering what the difference was, duh. My preference would be the gray background (just a personal thing), it's seems a tad softer on the eyes.

ah reckon, tharfo'e ah's, ah reckon.

Hi Katherine,
I looked at your site with both glasses on and glasses off. Loaded both sites and kept clicking back-and-forth. First with the top of both pages loaded, then with the bottom. Possibly due to the picture at the top, the gray seemed to be more pronounced at the bottom and also looked better.

I viewed the site with IE 6.0 and resolution at 800 X 600.

I'm partial to the grey. I'd consider either framing the text table with black to break it more from the backgound or change the background to a solid dark color.

Hi Katherine,

Looks nice.. Its very clean but I do agree, it needs something. I think the menu is a little too large and throws the page out of wack. I also think think the logo should be to the left with the tagline to the right.

The grey for the navigation seems a bit drab to me..

I would add some type of pattern to the top black to give it some dimension and throw some images behind the text as the cell's background. Very suddle kinds of stuff.

Here is an image of ideas Im refferring to. Maybe it will help get some of these points across or give you some more ideas.

I think you should think about changing the lines in the background. While scrolling they kinda threw me off a bit. May be a solid color. and put a border around the table.

Thanks Jemperlynn,

Not sure what bg you saw - I am changing it about every 5 minutes at the moment, but some were certainly a bit too stripey.

Suggestions and changes are no doubt coming along faster than my typing, but here goes.

I usually like to do a screen shot and "play" before I make suggestions but I don't have time now. So here's what I'd be playing with until something clicked.

1) Behind the large amount of text, I'd try an ever so slightly lighter shade of gray, not too far from what it already is now.

I'd probably try this too:

****

2) Between "Peter Soutter is not a writer! "

AND

"Since 1995 he has worked as a script consultant and story analyst"

I'd place a hairline sized (maybe a half point) red line, horizontally and midway between the two lines of text. The line would extend no longer than the ! which follows the word "writer."

****

Suggestion #1 would reduce the dull gray look but would be keeping in line with your client's request for a monochromatic scheme.

Suggestion #2, or something like it, would bring a touch of color into a pretty large, gray area.

I think I'd also add a shift-return before "Peter Soutter is not a writer! " for a bit more "white (gray) space."

Mike54 -> RE: Would appreciate opinions (5/13/2002 16:09:08)

Katherine,

On the index2 page I almost think more contrast between the white "Script Surgery" is needed, it's almost faint (to my eyes). maybe outline the white text? On the services page perhaps going to #top would be better than going to services bookmark. They would all still show...

ah reckon, tharfo'e ah's, ah reckon.

PBailey -> RE: Would appreciate opinions (5/14/2002 3:32:08)

Katherine,
I agree with Mike on the script surgery on the index2 page but I notice that it appears to be outlined on the other pages and shows up fine.

I like the changes so far.

Troy,
How is the film strip background on your example done? I tried to do a similar effect and couldn't get it to work.

Thanks,

godshall2 -> RE: Would appreciate opinions (5/16/2002 19:21:40)

Hi Paula.

Actually its very simple. I took an image of a film strip, lowered the layers opacity to about 15% and then applied a layer mask so it has that fading effect.

This was in Photoshop. Dont use PSP, but I imagine it would be the same.

Thanks Troy,
Didn't think about the layer mask! I'll give it a shot.

Charles W Davis -> RE: Would appreciate opinions (5/17/2002 19:12:07)

abbeyvet,

The intended audience may not care, but many viewers can more easily read when the contrast in text and background color is greater. Also a personal preference.

Not so forgiving, in my opinion is improper punctuation. I quote the following:
quote:
Since 1995 he has worked as a script
A comma should appear after: "Since 1995,..."
quote:
In London Peter worked as a script
A comma should appear after: "In London,..."
quote:
In Sydney Peter joined Beyond Film's
A comma should appear after: "In Sydney,..."

Enjoy! It's your endeavor!
