Is it normal a Server DOWN for 2 days? - 5/12/2002 21:23:12
This is not the first time it happens, but my webpage has been out of the Internet for over two days now, due to a hacker's attack. My questions are, A) is it "normal" to take 2 or 3 days to fix a problem like that? B) Are all servers vulnerable to hacker's attacks? C) Could anyone recommend me a good and reliable hosting ONLINE 7 days and 24 hours? -mine is off at least once every two months. Thank you for your assistance.

I HIGHLY recommend datapipe.com. I was with the worst company in the biz...a nightmare...switched to datapipe.com last June and have slept well since.

Not the cheapest, but worth it.

No, it's not normal for a server to be off the air for 2 days, at least not at a commercial grade ISP.

I'm very happy with www.crystaltech.com

Doug, many thanks for your reply. You say you've got a webpage and you're hosted in Crystaltech since last june. My questions is, how many times since june has your server gone down, and of course, are you more or less continuosly checking your web?
Thank you Doug.

José

Hi hzarabet, thanks for your helpful reply. I'm already studying their site. One elementary question: I guess they provide the statistics and hope they're good -are they?-, but something else that worries me is whether the mail accounts remain the same, with the same names and so forth. The reason I ask this is because my host keeps telling me that if I change the hosting everything will become a mess for me.
Thank you very much.

José

Nothing will become a mess for you - sounds to me as if things are a bit of a mess as it is.

This is what you do.

1. Stop discussing it with your current host and back up your web, if you have not already done so.

2. Decide where you are going and set up an account

3. Upload/publish/move all your stuff to the new server before cancelling your old service

4. You email addresses - assuming the new host provides them, and you will have chosen one who does - will be the same, they will be anything you like. Most hosts will provide you with a control panel for setting these up - set them up now even though your mail is going through you old host

5. When everything is set up on the new server change the DNS information (ie nameservers) for your domain to point to your new server. There will be info on doing this at your new hosts website - if not ask them, not your old host.

Once the DNS changes have resolved - usually 24-48 hours - your site will be being served from the new server.

6. Contact your old host at this point, say thank you very much and goodbye and cancel your account.

Its all a bit of a hassle but not a big deal really.

Nope - Most problems an hour or less, major problems less than 8 hours

Yep - but most are pretty secure.
