Publish to web help needed asap! - 5/15/2002 10:01:47
I have been trying to help a friend get some changes done to their site. I am somewhat familar with fp, but i am also not computer illiterate, so if i dont know it i can usually figure it out. Well not this time, lol. I have downloaded his files from his server, and made the changes on one of the pages and the "publish to web" feature is not highlighted.
HELP! i was supposed to have this done months ago, but cant figure this out!

try this... open the page in Internet Explorer. not Frontpage. go to file-->Edit with MS Frontpage. If the server has the Fp extensions installed you should get a password box. If not, don't despair, but let us know what happens...

first off, do you have yahoo im or aol? :) I did as you said, but should the password come up once i open it in fp? It didnt have a password. I have downloaded the files from his server and made the changes and saved it, then tried to publish it and it doesnt have that option highlighted, and even now that i did it as you said, its still not highlighted.

I get the responses immediately. If you have a URL i can check for the extensions...

site check shows that the Fp extensions are not installed. if your host doesn't offer the frontpage extensions you can still use FP. One way is to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol). There are many free FTP programs available, you may already be using one if you downloaded the files. the steps are:

1. get a FTP program
2. get the address and password. sometimes its the first part of the email address.
3. make the connection to the host
4. copy the files to the host server

then find out if the FP extensions are available from the host, and have them install them. That will make the publish button available

I checked in here one last time before i head out the door.. but if its any consolation, i DO have his files in ftp and html format. I chose to do frontpage, since i was familiar with it, and the host company "said" that it would work. Is the ftp thing free? They even said i can do changes directly through there website, but i am not sure if i can figure that out. I guess i may have to give it a whirl if this doesnt work.

sorry for the delay, had to troubleshhot something at a site. we're getting there...

If you don't mind giving me the Hosts name I can see what kind of file transfer option they have, may be the easiest. FTP can be found for free.

When you open the site, try clicking on the first item in the file list to select it, and then see if the publish option is available. I've seen this a few times when I open a site on my hard drive. Until you actually make a selection from the list, FP doesn't seem to understand that the site is actually open.

Also, make sure you are connected to the internet when you try to publish.

Hope this helps.

is the host XO? looks like they have what you need. most hosts provide a "control panel" that allows you to set up various options like mail and frontpage. thiers is hidden somewhere or maybe they can give you the URL (it works from your browser). Also, if possible, get the tech support guys on and have them stay with you while you get FP connected. I hate it when they say "you can do this, etc" but they don't tell you how!

did a little poking around and here's the URL

http://cp.xo.com

you can use either login. after you enter the name and password you should get a panel with options for mail, FP, etc. They say they have a way for you to upload your files. you might try that first to get you going, then set up the FP extensions. Hopefully you have Frontpage 2000 or better, less bugs...

I've noticed the same problem - this is how I get around it. When you open FP - select File -> open web. Once the web files are visible the publish option is now viable. You can select to publish to the web from the hard drive or reverse and update the files on your hard drive if you work online.
Hope this helps

ahrensmom, if you are out there, a check of the site shows the FrontPage extensions are not installed. You can still upoad your file using thier control panel or FTP but you won't be able to "publish" until those are running.

I called them and they were supposed to install the extentions. Then i found out about "open web" the tech guy told me what to put in there, and it wouldnt work. It wont open the web. says its connecting to web then says invalid file name. I havent had a chance to do more with it yet, but i will be home later tonight and work more on it. I will also call the tech people because they said they were installing extentions the day before yesterday evening. and that i should have an email by yesterday morning but i havent.

ill reply more tonight.

Shouldn't need a filename, just the url...
as of Saturday 11:00 Pac, I still see no FP extensions installed at that URL.

OK! phew! after all that. Finally got it up! First i stumbled on doing it, with that i accidentally deleted the rest of the site! I did manage however to get that fixed.

The first thing i did was go to the site i wanted to edit, choose file - edit with ms frontpage. Then made the changes, chose save as, chose ok, then the publish web became available. (sometimes it didnt) then published it. But managed to delete everything but the changed page. LOL. Then, all i had to do to reput up the rest of my site was go to ftp:// (ip addy) then ok to the message that came up, then click on file, log in as, put in user id an pswd, and go into the public html directory and drag and drop the files from my computer! and thank god it worked! But... i would like whoever wants to, to go look at the site and let me know if it all looks ok to you *more professional website people, lol. I hope that fixed all the problems and i made sure i got a copy on cd with all the sites pages, since i deleted them from the host. oi vey! (dont know if i spelled that right.)

I want to thank everyone who came to my rescue! You dont realize how much i appreciated it!

I have been using frontpage for years, I think the problem is a little more technical then that. I have made a 70 page web site I'm not a newbie, thats almost insulting, maybe you could help me if you read what the actual existing problem was.
