How to blend one image into another? - 5/18/2002 17:03:12
For example, the header on this site: http://www.louisianasuccessions.com/ can someone explain how to make one photo or graphic blend into the next or into a solid color like this? Either in PSP 7 or Photoshop 5.5? I know it must have something to do with layers and blend modes and masks (oh my!) but I seem to have a block against figuring it out! Any tips, tutorials, etc gratefully accepted. Thanks! "My mind works like lightning. One brilliant flash and it is gone" - John W. Green

You're on the right track with the layer idea. Place each image into a new layer in your parent document then it can be as simple a matter as using the eraser to blend the edges together. To fade to a solid color use the gradient tool, setting one side to transparent. Play with the effect until you get the results you desire. My preference for this type of effect is to use Photoshop over PSP. I'm not aware of PSP allowing you to fade to transparent. <--Your information went data way --> Edited by - Michael on 05/19/2002 15:46:13

I tried the above in PSP. You can do it but the only way I found is to edit the gradient pattern until you get the effect desired. Kind of tedious, Photoshop may be easier. You can also paint with transparent, or any opacity varience in PSP. The process is basically the same as Photoshop. Go to masks/new/show all. Edit mask/ paint with airbrush tool. The paint brush wil also work but I find the airbrush easier to use for this task. Sometimes just changing the layer to a different opacity will do the trick depending on your design. I'm still trying to figure it out in Photoshop - can't figure out the mask part. Paula, your instructions in PSP really helped! Once I'm comfortable doing it in PSP I'll give it another go in Photoshop. Thanks, everyone. If there are any more tips, or if you have links to good tutorials, I'd love to hear about them. EWD, Here is a tutorial I had for layer masks in Photoshop Elements. Mayby it will help you in Photoshop. Paint on Layer Masks in Elements. 1-open image that is to have a selection made from it. 2-layer>adjustment layer>levels>ok>ok without making a adjustment. 3-hold down shift and alt and left click on the layer mask thumbnail (the one on the far right) in the layers pallet. 4-select air brush tool and black as the foreground colour. 5-now paint your selection (should be a ruby mask) using white as the foreground colour you can deselect from your selection. 6-hold down ctrl and alt and left click on layermask thumbnail, you should now have marching ants round you selection. 7-now click on your image in pallets to activate it. 8-select>inverse. 9-cut. 10-open new image and paste selection. Gradiant Mask in Elements 1-open image and paste layer into it. 2-as above. 3-as above. 4-select gradiant tool and black to transparent as the gradiant. 5-apply gradiant. 6-as above 7-as above. 8- press delete key. Paula So much to learn......

wow, time for some ol cut and paste... in photoshop, you have some layers going right. I usually create a duplicate layer of the one I want to work with. That way if I <ork> it I can just throw it away. go to Layer-->Add layer mask--> Reveal all... you will automatically be put into the mask mode, you can check by looking at the foreground/background colors, they should be black and white. select a paint or drawing tool, make sure that the black color is selected. Whatever you paint removes the color and what is behind it shows through... Fight the Spam! http://awebmasters.net/antispam.htm Edited by - caywind on 05/20/2002 00:13:04

Hey Paula, I meant this as a compliment . I put these kind of things in a snips file so that I can easily pass them along when needed. BTW, has anyone told you lately that you're amazing! Fight the Spam! http://awebmasters.net/antispam.htm

Actually wacom www.wacom.com has several excellent tutorials on how to blend images together using layer masks and brushes etc. You can go to their web site and see many examples of how to do this plus lots of other great effects. Go to their tips page. If nothing else, its worth visiting just to see some amazing things you can do with Photoshop. Gary Ready Page Graphic Design www.ready-page.com

thanks for all of these links - I've been trying to do this for ages - the wacom site is excellent.
