I hate to even admit this... - 5/20/2002 17:23:24
... but I'm still running Win ME. You can stop your snickering now. I know, I know, I should have dropped it a long time ago. It came with my machine, and I was waiting so long for XP, and now I find out that PWS doesn't run on XP Home, I have to fork out the dough for XP Pro... not likely to happen any time soon. Finally, my question: is there a reliable alternative to PWS or IIS that will run on Win ME? I'm only interested in being able to preview server applications in my webs without publishing first. Am I going to need to revert back to Win 98 or 2K? (both would be better than ME...) Just looking for some helpful advice... I'm sure I'll get a lot of ME jokes too... No jokes. My first suggestion is to "bite the bullet" and go for XP Pro, you'll never look back. If you just can't swing that - roll back to 2000, much better than ME. Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our Specialty Find a Web Professional

ME ranks right along side W95 & the first W98 for unreliablity and crashes. W2K was the first Win OS that actually worked. Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our Specialty Find a Web Professional

basically 95, 98, and ME were built using the same (flawed) code. windows2000 used the code that NT was built with. NT is used to run servers so it has to be reliable. I have one installation of w2k systems (20 machines) that has never had a crash on any of them....almost 2 years now... Yeah, I agree I need to switch, but in the mean time... any suggestions on a server solution? "There is too much apathy in the world, but I don't care."

If you don't need asp I believe Apache will run on ME. Here's some info on ME and PWS (kind of Snitzish), many people have been able to get PWS 4.0 to run on ME even though it's not supported by Microsoft. http://www.dougscode.com/faq/default.asp?id=q1036 ====== Doug G ======

hey Doug, there have been many posts about PWS, IIS, and XPhome. Do you know if apache or PWS can be set-up on it? I'll check the link.... Fight the Spam! http://awebmasters.net/antispam.htm

Thanks everyone... I'm gonna give PWS a try... see if I can get it to run. If not, I'll try apache. I'd still like to run asp tho... If anyone has any non-MS options or suggestions (short of anything Mac) I'd love to hear them! "There is too much apathy in the world, but I don't care."

As far as I know, XP Home doesn't run any of the MS web servers, although I heard about some deep deep registry tweaks along with "borrowing" some dll's from W2K to get IIS going, however the process was so far out I wouldn't even think about it. I believe Apache will run on XP Home but I don't have any definite info. There is a reference to some bug on XP in one of the Apache readme's so I guess it runs on some flavor of XP, anyway. ====== Doug G ======
