I was browsing through some of the templates offerred here, and at other sites, yet I have not been able to find one that I would like to use. I want to make a site for my business, which is a fine dinning Italian restaurant.
I was hoping that someone would be able to point me in the right direction here. I'd like to give a crack at making my own template.

If you create one page the way you like it you can save it is one name, the change it to be the second page and save it as another name. again and again.
If you wanted to make include files, highlight the [art you want to 'include' switch to html view and cut the selected code. The open a new page switch to html view and paste the code. save it, and go back to the original page and use the insert>web component>include>...feature.
This outta work.
Remeber when you make your page, use all tables, and when specifing size don't specify number of pixels, specify percentage. This way it will fit on all screen sizes.

Get your layout done (fonts, graphics, etc.) go to File-->Save As...

give it a good template name
change the Save as Type drop down to "Frontpage Template"

I usually build tables using pixels. This keeps the pages looking the same on all resolutions.

But if i view your site with monitor set at 1024x768 , and it was built with 800x600 pixels. it will not fill the entire screen. If you specify percentage, it will take up the whole screen.

Correct me if i am wrong. please, iam only going by what i have been told.

Building your own template would require skills with a graphics program. Do you have one? What is it?

In terms of graphic apps, I have Coler Draw 9, Adobe Photoshop 5.5, and Adobe Pagemaker 6.5.
So I i guess then I would have to create the look for the navigation bar and the buttons and banners and all that, then import them as pictures, place them where they go and finally save it as a template or theme ?
Does that sound right ?

Just jumping in on the pixels vs percentages issue.

There is no right or wrong, it depends what you are trying to acheive and the look you are going for.

Some sites suit a full screen layout, others do not or maybe in some cases you are going for one look and in some another.

When you use percentages the table (or page) will fill whatever percentage you specify of the screen no matter what its size or resolution. This can be great but it can also seriously mess up the way yuo want things to look. For example it can make lines of text very wide and thus difficult to read on larger screens/higher reesolutions. Sometimes this will matter a lot, sometimes it won't.

When you use fixed width then on larger screen/at higher resolution there will be extra 'white' space around your layout but the layout will remain the same. You just need to be sure it is narrow enough to avoid a horizontal scroll at lower resolutions.

As I say, no rights or wrongs here, just choice and different things to be aware of in each case.

And, BTW, yes, Yanagapa, you are on the right track there.

Hello,

Photoshop would be my preference. Typically you build your layout and then slice it up for html using Image Ready which came with Photoshop5.5.

It practically does all the work for you..

There is no rule that says you should use percentages to build your sites. It's really up to the designer. I think Abbeyvet stated it very well. I built a site for our church at www.fbcspringville.com It is built using pixels. I wanted a newsletter style site that would not shift when visitors visited with different resolutions. Tomorrow, I may need to build a site that requires my tables to be in percentages. The point is, the look you wish to achieve will decide whether pixels or percentages are best.
