Graphics: from nice to yucky looking - 5/25/2002 12:13:07
I recently created a site which doesn't view badly at all on my computer. When I viewed it on someone else's computer recently, it looks reeealy yucky! Font sizes are a lot bigger (which I know is controlled by the users browser). More importantly, the graphics look terrible. I'm aware of how AOL can degrade the look on graphics because of their compressed "web graphics" but I'm viewing with IE.

My main question is why do the graphics (photo jpegs) look so bad on one computer and not another? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?!

Thanks, gail

If you are used to looking at the web at a higer resolution everything can look big and awful to you at 800x600, but that is what someone accustomed to 800x600 is used to seeing.

jpgs that have been compressed a bit much can look poor at lower resolutions. It is also possible that they could look poor because of the color resolution on the other computer. I use 32 bit color and recently sat at an old computer that only had 256 colors. Things looked pretty grim all round to me but its owner, who had never used any other than this computer, couldn't understand what I was talking about.

Did you look at other sites on that computer? How did they look?

I'm viewing at 800x600 on both computers.

I realized AOL is on this computer so I emptied it's cache and refreshed the page. Things look a lot better so much has to do with AOL's default compression scheme. I admit, though, that a few of the jpegs are a bit over compressed.

Graphics at other sites look okay. Since the area in question deals with digital photography, I better rework. I also think I'll post a word to AOL users since there are zillions of them.

Thanks. I wish there were a few posts in the Lounge area that would get mangled!
