Domain name problem - 5/28/2002 11:14:26
Hi, I'm trying to register a domain name that had expired on 2/5/02. I know it normally takes up to 45 days for the name to be available for other users but it has been way too long, plus up until 2-3 weeks ago I could do a "whois" search and reveal all the registration info. Now when I do a "whois" search, I get an error saying that the database is inaccessible. It is only inaccessible on this particular domain (.com) no matter which website I'm using (godaddy.com, register.com, internic.com)--the .net, .org, etc. extensions are all fine. My question is twofold: 1) Has this happened to anyone else and 2) Where can I turn to get this name back into an available status? Any help is greatly appreciated... Thanks! The time differs with each domain. I've had domains available within a few days of expiration, but normally it takes weeks for the domains to become available because they are normally placed "on-hold" to allow the former owner one more chance at registration. I can't tell if someone reserved the name or not because the database always has the error that it is inaccessible. Still lost...Dan _________________ www.keada.com

It really depends on who the domain was last registered with how quickly it becomes available after expiry. Some release them almost right away, but Verisign have been known to hold on to them for very long periods, I had one with them that expired last October and it only became available again in mid April. They are by far the slowest..... suprise (not)!! Katherine ++++++++++++++++++++++++ www.inkkdesign.com Women and cats will do as they please. Men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

If it makes you feel any better, we had the same problem with a very unusual last name - so we went with ______family.com or .net. Sorry, it stinks when that happens! --Bri ----- #!usr/bin/girl

I had been watching an expired domain name for over two months, I finally contacted the prior holder, asked his intentions, and offered to buy if he was not going to renew. He said he was, I monitored the domain name for another month, (during which it was expired but never available), at which time he finally renewed it. Frustrating. The sad thing is. The site was still listed in Yahoo sites at time of expiration with 100 plus relevant links. By the time they got around to renewing, Yahoo had dropped it and so had most of the links. Go figure. Regards, Scotty
