Cheap alternative to photo shop - 5/28/2002 15:26:50
I'm poor and can't afford Adobe Photo shop. Anyone know cheap alternatives? Or is there anywhere to purchase used software?

PaintShop Pro is the main alternative to PhotoShop.

http://www.jasc.com and there's a free trial.

You can sometimes get good deals on software at Ebay, although you're sort of taking your chances. If you can absolutely only spend the money once, I'd go with PSP.

You might check out Photoshop Elements, it's a scaled down version of Photoshop and runs around $80.

A good online source for used software is http://www.half.com - theyre an ebay company, but you don't have to bid on things, just pay the asking price.

(I actually missed a chance at Photoshop 6.0 for $40 by ten minutes... I was bummed!)

I've only played with Photoshop Elements so I can't say much about it but Bri is right about Jasc. You can download a 30 day trial and if you like it, start looking for the CD in the stores. It usually goes for about 99 bucks but you can find discounts and rebates all the time. I'm still learning it (catch that, Nancy?) but it's a great program.

----to Dave --------
Well if you would quit finding all those other projects for when you take vacation, you would have learned it by now. and now you have to wait until November again.
-----end---

Actually I think Photoshop Elements would also be a good choice. I have it on a different machine on the network and have looked a time or two, but not really used it. And Paint Shop Pro is quite the program for the price.

Also (although is no longer support for it from MS) Image Composer, which came on the 2nd CD of the standalone version of FP2000, can do just about anything you might want - at the great price of FREE!.

I got a copy of Arcsoft Photostudio2000 for free with a Scanner Software CD. Works great and allows layers for blending images together and a number of file formats. The best part is it only cost $50 US.

So I got my brother (who is a graphics designer and uses all the good expensive stuff) to look at it and he was impressed and said it was by far the best of the cheaper progs.

You can have a look at the following address.
http://www.arcsoft.com/products/software/en/photostudio.html

There is a free demo version too. Good luck.

If it itches it will be scratched. We do that.

I also think Paint Shop Pro is the answer. With each new version it is fast catching up with Photoshop.

Do you think ther would be an issue of copyright with this. It was free after all, and MS discontinued the product. Anyway if you want it, you know how to find me.

rw,
I too went looking for good graphics creation and editing and stumbled upon Photoshop Elements. I love it. Can't say I've really looked hard at PaintShop Pro, but Elements is really easy to use and the things I've done with it really look great! Whether you work with a photo or create from scratch, you can save your work "for the web" as a gif, a jpg or a number of others (I basically use those two).[imgwww.natchezms.com/adsmallballoon.jpg[/img]

Please tell me your kidding For web work ist a nice little program but Photoshop is not made for web designers although many of us use it and Adobe is starting to market it as that. Its made for print and digital imaging and frankly PSP cant hold a candle to it..

Im amazed at how many complaints I hear of the cost but what many are forgetting, it really was intended for webdesigners(and our measly budgets) he he

Beloved PS user:)

Hi Godshall2
No, I´m not kidding. I´m assuming that rwren wants a program for web graphics and I think that for most purposes PSP has everything you need. There are now loads of effects and with the masks, filters and other features the imaginative mind can create just about anything. Check out the galleries in one of the PSP user groups.
I have PSP and PS installed and frankly I would rather use PSP. It is easier to learn and has a much more user friendly interface. The only reason I have PSP is for ImageReady that comes with it as this is great for PSD´s.

Look after #1 and don´t step in #2.

"I also think Paint Shop Pro is the answer. With each new version it is fast catching up with Photoshop." - What version of PS are you comparing it too?? Version 7 is a pretty impressive piece of software and combined with Imageready it is pretty tough to beat. Again, as I've said in the past, I'm coming from a print world so that makes me look at things differently than if I wasn't dealing with print.
As far as price goes, One way I've gotten software in the past was to buy a lower version of the software. For example go find version 5 of Photoshop and then upgrade. PS upgrades can be had for pretty cheap and as Bri said, you can often get lower versions of products on ebay for dirt cheap. Also, sometimes the lower version is great to start with. I'd never go below 5.5 but at 5.5 it would be a great starting point for Photoshop.

I do use PS 7 but Im referring to any version. Heres an example.

The most important reason for me is the industry uses Photoshop. If I generate and ICC profile in Photoshop, I know it will work correctly when I send images off to be printed. I can communicate with people on the other end better because they use Photoshop. Photoshop also provides nearly seamless Mac-PC compatibility with image manipulation (if you use an ICC workflow).

Again, PSP is a nice program especially for web designers. My only comment was to this quote:

You couldnt possibly be using Photoshop to its capabilities, if so this opinion would be a little different:)

Ok, some of you say Paintshop pro, others swear by Photoshop Elements, and I heard a couple of other ones. Please leave a link so I can see the finished product of some of these graphic programs. Thanks for everyone's input.

Enough of this! Rwen (arwen?). Just got a brand new registerable version of Adobe Photoshop LE with my Graphire tablet. Yours for the asking. Reason: I already have Photoshop7. I looked at the specs and it looks perfectly fine for a starter program. To tell the truth, I can't see what is missing or left out! I don't care if you e-mail me and I can spring for the shipping. Let me know!

What capabilities do you need for web graphics that PSP7 can´t provide?

Hi Piquet,

Again, your referring to web graphics and Im reffering to digital imaging, print work and photography...

Take your PSP files to the printer and see what they say....

If your looking for a web graphics program only, hell I wouldnt even spend the $80 when there are free ones that support many of PSP and PS web graphic creating qualities.

Anyway.. Its been fun:)
