Peter -> How many visitors am I really getting (5/28/2002 18:25:03)

My web site www.edinphoto.org.uk is being hosted by FastHosts, who supply a very useful log of usage and visitors for me.

1. The log has been showing several hundred visitors per day, but showing that about 30% of these visitors have viewed 0 pages.

2. When I look at the detail of who is currently logged on, I get a summary of users - sometimes including a few with very similar numbers - often with extremely low bandwidths each.

The answers to my two questions above may be related. Can anybody tell me what is happening?

Thank you.

Does your stats package count either sessions or page views? that s what you are really interested in...

Hi Peter -

I checked out your site and I couldn't stay there long. Too much scrolling and confusion. I think you are trying to pack too much info onto every page. Your home page scrolls forever and I can see why people leave. Try condensing your pages to limit scroll to no more then 3 screens. Take a look at http://www.foxnews.com and see how much info they can pack into a 3 screen scroll.

Just my opinion.

The only statistic that tells you "how many visitors"e getting is unique visits. If "a person" clicks through 10 pages that's 10 page views - but it's only one unique visit.

Reply to DarlingBri.

My site package gives me far more info than I'm ever likely to use. This includes (with statistics for yesterday):

a) Sessions 653
b) Hits 12560
c) Page hits 1357

I'm interested in a) I believe this is the closest I am likely to get to knowing the number of unique users, though I believe it is an 0verestimate because it includes the type of page I mentioned earlier where there is transmission of only a few hundred bites (- is this, perhaps some remote cache or other system logging onto my site with multiple accesses?)

I am interested in c) because it shows the total number of pages viewed, though my stats report actually gives a lot more info such as the number of users who viewed 0 pages, 1 page, 2-5 pages, over 100 pags, together with a report of the actual pages viewed and how many times each was viewed.

I have found no use for b) For some users, each page viewed counts as a hit in this statistic, but for others a page viewed can produce many hits, including one hit for each of the jpg images on my top and bottom borders for the page. I don't know why different users are treated differently.

Thanks for passing on your coments about my pages scrolling, and suggested web site for me to consider for style.

I agree that my my www.edinphoto.org.uk index page scrolls a long way. I had intended that people would scroll a little until they found something that interested them, then would click on the link.

I could easily take the four blocks of info from near the bottom of my front page and set them up as separate pages; but before doing so, I'd appreciate the views of anybody else who has the time to have a quick look at it.

Throughout the site, over the past few months, I've gradually been breaking pages down into 2 or more pages to avoid too much vertical scrolling (and I've tried to avoid horizontal scrolling entirely by keeping almost everything to max 600 wide.)

I've also noticed that most other sites have used smaller print than I started with, so I have been reducing a lot of the font sizes as I've edited pages - but I have over 2,000 pages on the site, and I'm doing all the work myself in my spare time, so it will take me a long time.

I hope my reply to DarlingBri above answers the point you made.

I'm really amazed at the amount of stats I get from the FastHosts report on usage. I'd just like to understand it all! If anybody needs to know more about these stats, please ask, and I can give more details.

Just tell us what stats package it is and we'll tell you how to interpret what you see. Is it called LiveStats, by any chance?

DarlingBri

Thanks for the offer to tell me about the stats. The package was called LiveStats (as you mention) until a couple of months ago. But now it has been discontinued and replaced by a new package called Matrixstats.

If you need to see any of the reports from my site on MatrixStats, please let me know.
