subscribe/unsubscribe feature - 5/28/2002 21:11:12
I've been reading "Creating Successful Newsletters" and have the following questions:

What's meant by adding a subscribe or unsubcribe feature? Do you simply use an email address then build a list manually from those who contact you? Or is there a more sophisticated method? Can you create this with FrontPage?

Thanks, gail

Hi Gail,

Good question, bascilly it's all in the list server you go with. I would go an extra length and find a double opt out list server. Double opt is where they sign up and provide an email address. They then have a certain time frame to reply to the email that the list server sends or the account is not setup. They, being the list server, control the base authentication. You just make your settings and build the list. I did a search on Google, I have not reviewed or used any of these just wanted to give you a stear, and this is what I got...

I run a couple of newsletters, and I always provide subscribe and unsubscribe options.

I use that one for most stuff. On my sites, there's a page where you can subscribe or unsubscribe (the application above will generate the code for you once you've configured it) and I ALWAYS include a link to that page in the newsletter itself so people can get off the list if they want to.

Double opt-in is pushed a lot these days, but I've never had my sign-ups abused and I think it creates additional barriers to people getting on your list. I get a lot of less-than-web-savvy folks, and frankly, they have a hard enough time just entering their email address correctly.

Thanks B & B!

lol! And many days I feel like one of them.

btw, Bri, I took a quick look at your site and it is a delight. I enjoy looking at the moderators sites as they always help me see possibilities. Gosh, I've so much to learn.

As to a listserv, I think it's something that will have to wait until I'm more skilled. But at least I know know it is a value-added feature which can be purchased.

Thanks again. gail
