flyaway: Content/Navigation - 5/29/2002 22:35:54
Hey,

It's been a while since I've posted a site up. A while back I asked for advice on The Writing Exchange. What you're seeing here is the evolved version. I'm very satisfied with the overall design, but I'm wondering if it is easy enough for people to understand. My basic question is this: can you easily understand what teens can do at the site? I've had people contact me and tell me that they were confused, although it seemed fairly obvious to me (since I'm the one who built it, of course)...

So I'd appreciate it if some of you could spend a minute checking it out and letting me know if there's anything that you're left confused about. The address is:

http://www.flyawaynetwork.com

Thanks a bunch! Any other comments are more than welcome ;-)

AcadiaGuy,
I might see how some are confused. For example, within your navigation links on the left, you have headings "Writings" and "Zines" with 3 to 4 links under each one. But each link under the heading leads to the same perspective Forum of it's heading. I'm assuming that the links read differently just to let the user know the different things they can do within the FORUM. Maybe having ONE link under the heading with a description (non-link) of things they can do might be an alternative.

Nice Site

Hi Bobby-

I stared at it for a few minutes. at 1024x768, my eyes kept going to the survey do you write outside school and the red lips. The survey had lots of white space around it so my eyes figured it was important and the bright red lips seemed important too. That's all I did. Sorry, but I was confused!!

You need to add a background image with the light blue bit and 3000 white pixles to the left so the blue bar extends all the way down to the bottom on your pages; in the forum, too!

It's an easy way to tidy your layout.

I'd do your editor articles in a forum, just to keep things consistant.

And it's so blue everywhere I don't know where to look. Can you make the table cells that the poll and the newsletter signup are in white? Youd sitll have dark blue tops and light blue borders, it just wouldn't all be so dense...

At 1024, your stretchy home page gets messy. I see no reason not to set your home page up so the top is 100% but the content is set to 800; it would be much more neat, you know?

But overall its a very good effort and it looks like you know where you want your site to go

I like what you have done also. However, I did just sit and stare at it for awhile too. I think if you would make your header bar text "the creative network FOR TEENS - BY TEENS" stretch across the top header, I would have understood the intention much better and immediately. The little flashing banner among all that blue space is kind of out of place. I agree with Swoosh regarding the multiple links to the same page as confusing. I kept looking for what was different. It frustrated me. I hope this helps. I like your content. But you can improve the layout like DarlingBri says. I hope I'm not too late to help. A teen site should be a little wilder too, don't you think? Just trying to help.

Hi Bobby,
Well, I'm glad its not just us "old folks" who get confused at some websites Looked at your site with IE 6.0, 800 X 600 and 28.8 on 56K

(1) All pages loaded extremely fast.

(2) I too became initially confused as to the multiple links to the same pages under "Writings" and "Zines". Were it not for the comments by Swoosh, I would have thought incorrect links. He has a good suggestion as to one links with descriptions of options.

I'd suggest you try Bri's suggestions. I have many posts, but limited website design experience. She's proven right many times in the past.

I have to also agree with Terry as to the site needing to be a bit wilder for teens. Just guessing here, I'm about to turn 53 and the kids are in their 20's. If it looked okay to me however, there must be something wrong as to teenages looking at it

Enjoyed the nice, especially the fast loads. Nice job!

Thanks everyone!

I'm going to follow many of the suggestions. The issue about having the multiple links to the same page is a good one... I can see how it would be confusing.

I think the whole Jet DSN error is the fault of the web host . Every once in a while that error randomly comes up for a few hours. A while back I contacted the web host. They talked about moving the site to a different server but I'm not sure if they ever did.

Does anyone know why the tables are wayyyy out of proportion in Netscape (I'm way back with version 4.04)?

Thank you for all your comments. OutFront rocks!
